Sounds silly maybe but I'm a first time mum and my MIL seemed shocked she wouldn't roll over on command (how date she not listen to MIL? ;))
But then I looked it up an it is a milestone at this age, she has rolled over from front to back twice so far and both by accident I think!
She does this thing where she lifts up her bum and pushes back so she moves back and she does tummy time and can hold her head

My ds is 5 months too and also cannot roll over yet. He has like your lo rolled from tummy to back twice but he shows more interest in sitting up now than trying to roll around. I think babies just develop at different rates and whilst it may take them longer to do some things they may be ahead in others. I wouldn't worry too much.

You can help her flexibility by lifting her legs up to her tummy (with her agreement Smile) and then rolling her legs from side to side (we learnt this in baby yoga and is supposed to help them understand how their bodies can move)

Hth

If it makes you feel any better my DD is a few days off 6 months and has rolled from tummy to back but not back to tummy.

Babies develop at different rates. I really wouldn't worry :)

Don't worry. My son didn't roll over til 10 months, but was walking by 12 months. The milestones are only guidelines.

DS didn't roll over till he was 10 months, then he did it a week before he crawled.

He hit every other milestone, even talked argued early.

He is a stubborn bugger though - he'd just yell until we moved him/the toy.

If there's nothing else to suggest a problem, try not to worry!

28 weeks here and we've seen a few rolls but she doesn't do it on purpose.

She is, however, sitting well, trying to bum shuffle and pull herself up.

Don't worry. Rolling especially is a milestone some babies just skip.

Mines 8 months he spent a few days around 5 months rolling back to tummy but hates being on his tummy so stopped. Nothing since as he is more interested in sitting and standing, his cousin was the same and he walked at a yr so I'm not to worried esp as ds is quite big and think generally big babbies move later.

my DS is nearly 4 years and he didn't really roll at all except by accident, obviously he can now but i think it would have been after the crawling/ walking stage. There is nothing wrong his physical development now. I was worried when he was a baby and my HV told me that rolling isn't a milestone and some babies never do it. In the same way crawling isn't a milestone as some babies never do that stage.

Really don't worry about these things - all in their own time

Mine didn't roll at 5 months! Keep your nerve with interfering MIL!! ;) you will cause yourself much stress as what should be a happy time if you let things like this stress you. As your lo's mum, you will know when you need to worry about development!!

It's what happens, because babies are put in their cot to sleep on their back so when they are awake some of us naturally carry on and put them on their back on a bkankie on the floor, under a playgym arch thing etc.

tummy time, a modern invention, is advocated to make up for different sleep time routines.

rolling over must be separated into two different categories:
1 - roll from tummy to back, which is fairly easy and babies who spend time on their tummies can achieve this first by accident around 3-4 months

2 - roll from back to front, which is much harder and a "conscious" effort.
look at animals. once on their back, they are extremely vulnerable and it is also a sign of showing weakness.
and some are unable to roll on to their front!

babies might start rolling from back to front around 6 months, but it takes time to master that skill, loads more muscles are involved and needs coordination!

OP

I have 6 children and none of them liked tummy time.
consequentially they never had a chance to accidentally roll from front to back then progressing to practise this.

DS1 rolled from back to front twice at 6 months, next thing you know he learnt to sit up and crawledConfused

the others were similar.

He is now almost 13 and absolutely fine. You have nothing to worry about, your baby's development is not delayed - and if you start putting on him on his front to play and look around he will probably roll over soon.

good luck

Neither of mine ever rolled over. They are both perfectly healthy. Don't worry.

Enjoy it! At five months my DD figured out rolling back to front. I spent four months having to flip her over every time she woke up in the night because she couldn't roll front to hack. Finally cracked it by nine months. If they can't roll, they can't get stuck! And later rolling was no problem here either. Crawling at nine months, walking by thirteen months.

My two never rolled over. Obviously being 5 and 2 they can roll but it was never a thing they did. They learnt to sit, crawl and walk then they just could roll over.

Don't worry about it. I'm a first time mum and was panicking when DD didn't roll at 5 months, then 6 months, then 7 months etc. She crawled at 8 months, cruised at 9 months and FINALLY rolled at 10 months! And now nappy changes are such a pain in the backside, as she rolls over and crawls off, I bloody wish she couldn't roll now Grin

DS is 6 months. Not rolling either Wink I'm not worrying either. You don't see a 10 year old that can't roll Grin enjoy while they are no into everything that's what I think Confused

Try telling MIL to roll over and see if she does it on command....Grin

Really really do not worry about rolling. With dd1 I foamed at the mouth with anxiety over rolling. She didn't roll from back to front until after she learned to crawl (shurely shome mistake?!!) and didn't crawl particularly early but she cruised and walked at an average age (about a year). Fear not!!
