  1. Would they run off with no regard to road safety ?

  1. Would they drop to the floor like a sack of spuds ?

  1. Do they shout that they hate school or other negative phrases.

  1. Do they hit and kick you ?

DS1 is 5 next week, and occasionally walks to school with me, always walks to school from childcare.
Are you still interested in my answers?

  1. 4y11m

2.no, never
3.no, almost never
4.no, never
5.not while going to school, but we do have not liking school, and desperation for weekends. I am also hated/horrible on occasion.
  1. occasionally (maybe once a month, usually when over tired)

7.would depend how often. If once in a blue moon, I'd think having a bad day, but if it was something like this every day I saw, I'd be wondering if there was something bigger going on.

Is everything OK?

Thanks, I'm fine.

It is just that my DH thinks the above IS normal behaviour for this age group and I don't....just wanted some other people's points of view.

a) mine are older now, but we used to walk at that age.
b) no
c) no (might have been the odd running off lapse, but I don't remember anything dangerous)
d) never
e) yes, from time to time
f) no (except when practising martial arts)
g) unless I had further information, I would assume it was just a bad day. We all have plenty of them. Mine didn't exhibit the behaviours you're asking about, but had plenty of other things in their arsenal.

Why are you asking, BTW?

Would think the child was having a bad day' might think more if i saw that child acting like that everyday

No mine never did any of that. Clung onto my leg in the playground a bit, cried a few times at drop off. I checked with school when I got to work and they were always playing happily by that point so I assumed it was separation anxiety which they grew out of.
I've never been hit or kicked by my child, but I have seen children doing that and I always find it pretty shocking. However, my kids hit each other on occasion so it's not like I know how to stop it.

I would assume it was a one off if I saw a 5 yr old doing it, but if I saw them doing it every morning I'd be concerned for them.
I think your child is giving you a clear message there and you need to listen to.

What is it about-leaving you, school or another issue?

Perhaps your dh could take some leave, do the school run and then give you his opinion?

6.9yo
  1. Do they have to be physically carried outside the house to start school run ?

Sometimes if they are busy doing something they don't want to stop
  1. Would they run off with no regard to road safety ?

No-if he doesn't wait at appointed stops then he doesn't get to ride his scooter home. That threat is enough.

  1. Would they drop to the floor like a sack of spuds ?

No, but that's not something he's ever done, he prefers to shout!!

  1. Do they shout that they hate school or other negative phrases.

Yes. Last week he said he'd rather die than go to school. I told him he wasn't being given those options. Wink

  1. Do they hit and kick you ?

Not generally, I certainly won't say it hasn't happened, occasionally and getting rarer as he gets older.

  1. If you saw the above behaviour on the school run, would you regard this as normal bad behaviour for this age of boy OR something else.

Would put it down to a bad day. If it happened every day, I still wouldn't worry yet if I saw him behaving in other places.

6 year old DS. No to them all except for sometimes saying he doesn't like school. Not shouting about it though, more quietly grumbling.

If I saw another child doing that I'd think it was a one-off and something had upset them, or if possibly think they had some behavioural problems.

Guitargirl · 03/05/2014 19:01

DS is 5.4 and I would answer no to all those questions. If I saw that kind of behaviour on the school run (and I have) I would feel sympathy for the parent and just assume that the child was having a bad day.

DS is 5.5 and we walk to kindergarten.

He's used to the routine so he doesn't moan or refuse. We can't physically carry him out as we live on the second floor but sometimes he does have to be pushed out of the door! I would say that he does all of them on occasion but 90% of school runs are totally incident free. More likely to have issues on the way home, because he's tired and his blood sugar is low because (IMO) they go too long without enough food - this is a culture thing as we are abroad.

Some of the 6yos at the kindergarten walk home by themselves. I'd say DS' road safety/awareness is very very good unless he's in a particular devil may care mood when his behaviour in general is unpredictable.

Thanks for the posts.

Sounds like a mix of answers, leaning to better behavedkidsthan mine.

It isn't every day, we had three bad school runs last weekand it got me down....hoping for better time next week.

Ds is 5.5

Sometimes have to physically carry him out of the door, and have been known to put his shoes and coat on him on the street, with him screaming.

He doesn't run off and he doesn't hit or kick.

However he does have a very severe speech disorder, dyspraxia, and he is very young for his age. He still awakes most nights. I think he has a lot of frustration and sometimes that comes out in difficult behaviour, although most of the time he is very well behaved.

Ds2 is 5.
After previous bad behaviour on the school run he now scoots to school on a mini micro scooter. I know how much people hate kids on scooters but he is very considerate and enjoys the school run now.
We also tried a chart which we marked with a star for every successful school run. The stars led to treats, this helped, but the scooter was better.

GerbilsAteMyCat · 03/05/2014 20:20

We also once took DS2 on the school run in his pjs as he refused to get ready. No doubt this will probably be regarded by some as abuse, he lasted 2 minutes in his pjs before he got changed and is substantially easier to handle in the morning now.

My DS has been scooting to school since just turned 4 (5 in August) and none of the questions have been an issue. He sometimes scoots off too far but he is very good about road safety and would always stop at a road.

If I saw those things, including the dropping to the ground I'd be a bit Hmm if it was regular but DS has his whiny tantrummy moments too. But I'd be Shock at hitting or kicking. My DS's feet wouldn't touch the ground if he tried that, he'd be marched home under my arm and denied anything nice for the rest of the day. He did try it a few times aged 2-3 and him being carried kicking and screaming home wasn't that rare but it seems to have sorted it.

My ds is 5 and occasionally says he doesn't like school and very occasionally runs off without thinking about road safety.

If I saw a child behaving like this every day then I would think there was something wrong.

My friend's ds regularly did/does all of the things in your op from when he started school. He's like that pretty much every school day. He's also very smart and artistic. He's just been diagnosed with Aspergers and is finally getting some help that my friend has been asking for since he started school.

Some children behave occasionally as you've described, including my ds and dd, but IMO if its every single day that its happening then there is either behavioural issues or something is going on at school which needs sorting.

7 I would feel sorry for the poor parent I think its normal behaviour. My DS does this at lest once a week. Its not fun when you have 3 other Dc's on the school run I always tell DD 10 to go to ahead so she is not late and we have only 1 road to cross as I struggle across with a buggy and DS2. His behaviour has got worse since DS 3 was born 8 weeks ago.
But he was like this in reception too. I would love to hear how other people have dealt with this.
Report
BornToFolk · 03/05/2014 20:43

DS is 6.5, has walked/from school since reception and has never done any of those things. However, that's not generally how he misbehaves. He'll walk at a snail's pace and sulk and strop. He hasn't asked to be carried since he was about 3 and would be mortified if one of his school friends saw him being carried!

I've seen bad behaviour on the school run and generally just thought "oh dear, so-and-so's having a bad day!" If I saw it regularly, I'd be more Hmm, especially the hitting/kicking and running into traffic.
