5 month old scalded by boiling water-please help

My DD was scolded by boiling hot water in a flask placed on her pram yesterday by a close family member-it wasn't secure and leaked through. I'm distraught and don't want to talk to this person. She is 5 months old and ive just got home from Bristol burns unit, seems her usual self but im just so devastated for her, poor baby. She was placed under a cold running tap for 20 minutes then taken to hospital. This morning she had a bio-brane dressing put on her leg under GA and the Consultants say she has complete partial thickness burn (4% mid-deep burn). It's a waiting game to see if it heals by itself in the next 10-14 days-the outer area they believe will do but they say it's 50:50 for the middle area which is quite deep and may need a skin graft. I'm hoping and praying the burn will heal completely....and obviously ideally for her no scarring or discoloration of skin. It's such a large burn on a little leg. She is to eat a protein rich diet to aid healing so her breast milk and ill blend some fish, cheese, beans etc for her.

I'm in shock atm and just want answers now..but unfortunately we all have to wait. She has an appointment on Saturday to see if the bio-brane is still sticking, and will have her dressings changed every 2 days.

Thank you

Hello,
I don't know what to say except I'm so sorry for you what an awful accident.

I have everything crossed for the healing process to be as quick as possible.

Poor you and poor baby.

A friend of mine when slightly older than that managed to pull a whole freshly boiled kettle over himself from a work surface. He was treated at the local burns unit for severe burns and he only ever ended up with very minor skin discolouration.

Is she in pain? Have they suggested anything for the pain?

Hugs xx

I hope she gets better soon, poor mite. You must be going through so many emotions right now. My son suffered a severe burn to his right hand at 11 months. It blistered so badly and he screamed in pain at each dressing change. But he healed so quickly and there is no scarring. The only permanent effect was that he became left handed. I hope your little girl has a similar happy outcome.

I had a full body burn at 11 months, pics of it are awful but there's not a mark on me from it, no scars or skin discolouration. However I spilled tea on my leg (no milk so basically boiling water) when I was 14 and had a nasty burn and I just have a slight white scar just above my ankle where it burned deepest and it's only really visible if I ever catch abit of a tan.
Youve done everything you can so far and it will look worse before it gets better.

Thank you for your replies, they really give me hope. Her nappy leaked urine from the night onto the top of her dressing which has meant about an inch is wet-its a tough place as right inside her groin but im on my way to get it re-dressed and checked at the burns unit. She doesn't seem in any pain which is worrying re nerve damage but also the biobrane will reduce pain. I wokw to he squealing in delight at her mobile, broke my heart.

I'll keep you updated and thank you again for your help, it's really wanted and needed x

Well the biobrane was still on all over-no 'bubbling' which can mean it's not re-healing underneath but they said it's still early days and that normally shows after 2-3 days, it's been 1. So next appointment on Sunday will show more. There were white areas which they said shows deeper damage which was near the outside, just behind her knee. DD herself is no different, an absolute joy and no sign of any pain.

So sorry - Fingers crossed that you'll see improvements by Sunday - At such a young age, hopefully she'll be able to heal much quicker and more fully than if she were older...

My dd had similar injuries to your dd (although she was 5) and was treated with biobrane at Bristol Burns Unit. The treatment was incredible and her skin healed very quickly. She was even able to go swimming two weeks after the injury. It took a long time for the redness to fade completely, but she has no scarring at all and her skin is completely smooth.

I really feel for you, it is a horrible experience. But the treatment is absolutely first class at Bristol, and she has an excellent chance of a full recovery.

Ohhh banished, your message made me cry with hope. Thank you everyone too. Banished-were you lo's burns mid-deep...as in some areas deep where they thought the biobrane may not work and a skin graft instead may be needed?

So sorry to hear this, OP. Horrific experience.

All good wishes for her recovery, and for the recovery of your family. The person who put the flask there will also be in anguish, an if they feel like I would in that situation I do feel sorry for them.

Such a sad situation. Poor you, a nightmare for any parent.

Fingers crossed it heals without skin graft, but if that is needed, they have such success in young children.

Oh your poor baby! The biobrane sounds a great treatment. I hope she,ll make a fantastic recovery. Their skin.is just growing and turning over all the time when they're small.

Thanks and best wishes for you both. X

I really feel for you as it is absolute agony watching your child suffer. She seems like a resilient little baby and hopefully she will be fine. My niece once burnt her forehead on a red hot iron which had been placed under the bed. Sudocrem worked wonders with the healing process and helped prevent any long term scarring. Perhaps that would help once all her hospital treatment is over, in addition to whatever they recommend/prescribe of course. Hugs to you and baby. x

I'm very sorry, and i hope that your LO will be fine - but why on earth would you put a flask of boiling water next to a baby? that's crazy.

My dd had partial thickness burns, which I know is the type of injury which responds best to biobrane. But, as far as I can remember, her scald looked very similar to your dd's.

The support at the Burn's Unit is very good and they are pioneers in this type of treatment, so you can be sure that your dd is getting the best treatment.

I am sending you all my best wishes. xx

It's the 'deeper burnt areas' within the partial thickness burn they are not sure about, whether it will heal with the biobrane or not. I'm praying it does. This wait is totrure.

Oh poor thing! You must be so worried. Glad to hear that she doesn't seem in pain, though. Hope she heals quickly.

If it helps at all, I had a horrific burn on my leg when I was 10 - I fell against the hot exhaust pipe of a motorbike while wearing shorts. Burnt clean down to the bone (just on that boney bit of the shin where there isn't much flesh). It was incredibly painful and it took the entire summer to even close, and I had a scar for a long time, but now that I'm an adult it's actually completely invisible, even if you know it's there. Even I can't see it. And I didn't even have the expert treatment your DD is getting, only a few checkups with a GP. I hope the positive stories of healing people are giving you on this thread help a little.

Your poor baby & poor you. What an awful thing Fir you both to go through, this must be absolute torture for you. Sending big hugs & going for a full & speedy recovery for her. You must feel awful but time really is a great healer, for both of you.

My mil had a full kettle of boiling water spilt over her foot 10 years ago. She had no specialist treatment (not in this country) & poor treatment & woo woo advice from well meaning relatives meant she actually got an infection in delaying healing but now she just has a faint scar. At the time we'd never have believed it would heal so well.

It sounds like she is getting the best possible treatment & she has her Mummy's love to help her through too.

Thank you xx She's having a good feed atm and being her usual chirpy beautiful self. Breaks my heart. She is my absolute world, from the moment I saw those 2 pink lines I have done everything in my power to protect her and will always do so-including her never being left with that irresponsible woman again.

Naoko-did you not need a graft? Was there enough skin for it to eventually heal back?
