1 Year Old DD2 Sleeping TOO MUCH!!?

Hi! My DD2 has just turned one and SLEEPS ALL THE TIME still!! I have worked out she must sleep about 18 hours in about every 24!! I know most people will say "enjoy it while it lasts" etc, but it is beginning to worry me.

At night she sleeps from 7pm til 7am (but that's only cos she shares a room with DD1 who wakes her up at that time, if left to her own devices, she would wake up about 9am/10am!!!!) Then she sleeps from 8.30am til about 12pm - She would have another sleep in the afternoon from about 2pm til 4pm, but I don't let her; but then she will normally conk out about 4pm, which make bedtime a little more tricky.

Is that normal?? Does anyone else' 1 year old still sleep as much as this?? If she doesn't get her full quota of sleep she won't eat and just sits in the high chair arching her back, throwing food eveywhere and screaming her guts out. It is quite scary.

She was a little prem (month early) and is still quite small (18lb, 6-9 / 9-12 clothes) and is very active when she is awake.

I am just starting to get a little worried, particularly with the screaming when she doesn't get enough sleep.....

Not too sure whether it is an issue or not to be honest but ds was a very sleepy baby. At one he was still having two naps a day of at least a couple of hours each as well as nite sleep (which was pretty interupted admittedly but definately had between 16-20 hours sleep in 24. He is now 20 months and up until the last two days has slept 12-14 hrs at nite as well as 2-4 hours in the day so was still netting 18 hrs some of the time.

Mmmmmmmmm, well my DD1 was pretty sleepy too - up until she was 15 / 16 months she was sleeping 12 hours at night and then 4 hours ish in the day, but she was ok if she didn't get loads of sleep - whereas DD2 screams her head off!!!! I suppose that's what I really worried about - the crazy behaviour!! Thank you for your reassurance yawningmonster!! Smile

At 1, my DD (14 months) was sleeping 6pm to 7am, and up to four hours in the day. Pain in the neck if she didn't get that sleep. Just after her birthday she suddenly dropped a sleep and now she sleeps about two hours a day and about 13 hours at night. If your DD seems perfectly fine health and development wise, I wouldn't worry about it - just enjoy, probably won't last that much longer.

I am going to report this thread to mumsnet on the grounds it is making me sick Envy

seriously, don't mean to make light of this - actually I am sure it's not a problem, you say your DD is very active when she is awake, so I wouldn't worry; she knows what she needs, and it obviously isn't doing her any harm. She is still very young, still a baby....I'd go with it.

As I said sparklemagic ds slept alot of hours but it was definately pretty interupted at nite and he didnt actually sleep through (longer than 4 hrs) until he was 13mths, until then he woke pretty regularly! So dont feel too Envy, it also used to worry me as ds has a medical condition and I worried that it was a sign things were not going well.

hey CaptainDippy - my DS is nearly 16 months old and still sleeps up to 5 hrs a day - and from 7 - 7 with no wakings - I was also concerned but the paed said that as long as he is happy during his waking hours and is thriving, there is nothing to worry about -if your lo is sleeping, it's because she needs it, so leave her to it IMO

Ds (18 months) also screams the house done if he is tired and hasn't got enough sleep. He has always done this and is impossible to calm down. We have just come back from a holiday and the flight was a nightmare as he didn't get a proper lunchtime nap (we were travelling to the airport and he slept but he only had 1.5 hrs insted of his usual 2-3 hrs and it was in the car which is never as good for him as in his bed). He was manic by 5pm and screamed so loudly you couldn't hear any of the announcements on the plane Blush. He eventually fell asleep but was really grumpy when we got off the plane and in the cab again.

I find this a real problem as people think I am making a fuss because I am always planing my days so that he get enough sleep. The problem is if he doesn't my life is hell. If he does get enough sleep he is a different child.

Ds needs sleep but really fights it so I have the worst of both worlds on that front - well he does eat well so at least I don't have any problems with him on that Grin YET!!

Thank you coolmama and lazycow - Glad you understand and don't think I'm just being one of those frantic mothers. My biggest problem is that my 2 DD's sleep in the same room, so DD1 wakes DD2 up at 6.30 / 7am and then DD2 gets so distraught she won't eat breakfast and screams the place down - every single morning. I am loath to put them in separate bedrooms, but perhaps I should, or perhaps I should just hold tight til she grows out of it!!? Not sure. Mmmmmmm......

Put them in separate rooms if you have the space. Especially if their sleeping patterns differ. Why are they in the same room? Is it due to space?

Report
lazycow · 31/05/2006 12:43

Unless it is a space issue I'd definitely put them in seperate rooms if you can.

CaptainDippy · 31/05/2006 18:54

Space issue, I'm afraid, also I'd quite like them to grown up sharing a room if poss - Think it does them good IMHO!! Smile Don't know, thank you for posts though!! Smile

Envy CaptiainDippy and then LOL when I saw all the Envy faces on this thread!

I wish DS2 would sleep like that.... think of all the stuff I could get done..... washing...... MN..... tidying.... MN...... cleaning... MN......

poppiesinaline · 31/05/2006 19:39

oh and to the room sharing thing.... if you have room let them have their own rooms. Two of mine HAVE to share and they have completely different sleeping patterns and it is a PITA. Every night I wish they could have separate rooms.

CaptainDippy · 01/06/2006 08:07

Interesting. Perhaps I should. Mmmmmmm.....

Yes, I could get all of that stuff done when DD2 is sleeping, but unfortunately I have 2.4 yr old DD1 to worry about - so nothing gets done in DippyLand, I assure you!!!!! Grin

CaptainDippy - lol -
I generally don't confess to my DS sleeping habits as I figure I will just get a load of cyber-coffe cups pelted at me! Grin - however I do understand that whole thing about being tied to the house - PITA - until I decided that if you can't beat 'em, join 'em ! - and so now I nap in the afternoon while DS sleeps - Sod's law says it will all go tits up with a second baby, but for now am just enjoying the naps!
Hope you get your two sorted .
