18 month old screaming at bedtime

My 18 month old DD has always been a brilliant sleeper. We normally put her down in her cot, leave and she happily goes to sleep.

The last few days she suddenly started having absolute hysterics when put down. Today it too her 2 hours to go to sleep at lunch time although I know she was shattered - she was going to sleep in the car on our way back from toddler group.

She starts screaming (not just crying) from the moment she is put down in her cot. Today was on and off screaming/ crying/ chattering. In the end I put her down in her travel cot in another room. The same happened the last 2 days. I can't work out if she is frightened of smth in we room? I tried opening the curtains a bit so it's not too dark in case that's suddenly the problem, but it didn't help

Nothing really happened that I can pinpoint. We have just come back from a 2 week holiday where she slept fine, was fine for a few days after the holiday as well and then this suddenly started.

She is a Gina Ford baby and has always been in a perfect routine and thrived on it (although this hasn't really applied recently (6 months) as not much of a routine after I went back to work and she had to fit in with childminder's schedule. )

If anyone could advise what's going, I am going crazy here!

Is she teething (molars?). DS hates being left when he's teething but goes to sleep fine on his own at other times.

If not, anything new in her room? Stuffed animal, furniture etc?

Might be time to move to a bed. Same thing happened with my son at about the same age we changed his cot into a bed (it was a cot bed) and the screaming stopped and a peaceful bedtime resumed.

Thank you both. rrreow, it only just occurred to me after reading your post that we had moved her furniture around a bit. I moved it bac before her bedtime tonight, but there were still tears as soon as it was bed time. Pretty sure she is not teething. She's very happy in the day, eats fine and once she's asleep, still does her full 12 hours at night.
Caz, I'm not sure she is ready for a bed yet. Still sleeps in her grobag and moves around the cot way too much. She has never tried to climb out if her cot, so not sure that's it? Ours isn't a cot bed, so would be a lot g hassle if it's just a weird phase....
