Behaviour/development

Is it really accurate - toddlers height as adults is twice the height they are at 2 years old?

Is it? Shock

That means my DS will be really short!

No, I remember them telling my mum I would be 6ft because I was so tall as a toddler, guess what I'm 5ft 6 and a half.

Oh my goodness, I'd never heard of this but I've just worked out DD's who's 21 months and she's come out as 5'2" adult height - I'm 5'2" so hopefully she'll grow a bit more before she hits two and she might make it to 5'3" (!) How short would your DS be if it's true?

TheNebulousBoojum · 24/11/2012 13:13

Worked for both of mine, to within a centimetre or two.

I was just thinking about this. DS's two grandfathers are over 6 ft 2 , his father 6 1 and his uncles 6 3. He is 2 in the new yesr and currently is 88cm tall so if this were right he would be 5 7. Which I don't think he will be - possibly, but not probably.

Doesn't foot size have something to do with it too? Mind you, DD has big feet but there's no way she's going to be tall!

Report
fluffacloud · 24/11/2012 13:19

I was told this - I hope it isn't true DD1 measured 3'1 Shock

Saying that I'm 5'11 and DP is 6'5 so she had no chance of being short.

My MIL told me that boys are always taller than their DMs.

Report
Bunbaker · 24/11/2012 13:24

It would make DD 5'10" if that is the case. She is 12 now and 5' exactly which is bang in the middle of averages for her age. I am 5'7" and OH is 6'2" so she probably will be taller than average, but most of her friends are taller than her right now.

Report
harkharkhark · 24/11/2012 13:27

If it's accurate, he'll be 5ft 6". DH is 5ft 8/9". I'm 5ft 1".

Oh and he has tiny feet!

I'd hope he'd be at least DH's height. DH was really tiny as a kid and then 'shot up' (it's all relative Grin but he was bullied at school for his height Sad

If it's any consolation all the men in my family are average height - 5'9"/5'10" despite all the mums, aunties and female cousins being 5'0"/5'1" so I don't think maternal height has much to do with boys height...

My dd was around 95 cm, I really hope she's not 190cm adult Hmm

She will be taller then her dad at 6'2"

Ds will be 6ft 6 If it's true and dd will be 6ft.

I'm 5ft 6 and dh is 5ft 10. Confused

ds1 has half an inch to go to make it true, and i am such a shit mother the novelty of remembering this stuff passed me by for dd and ds2

Report
psychomum5 · 24/11/2012 13:56

I was told this by my first HV.

It hasn;t worked out for my two eldest daughters, who have now finished growing. They are both 3inchs shorter than predicted.

And in fact, dd3 in already 2 inches taller than predicted, and as she is 14 next week, she still has growing room. She was a poorly baby tho, so got stuck for a long time. I think she is now making up for it.

I think it was supposed to be age 2 for girls and 2 and a half for boys. Does that make it work better?

Report
Moomoomie · 24/11/2012 14:04

I always knew it as double the height at two years, give or take 10%, which makes a mockery of the whole thing really.
I think there is a more accurate way of working it out including the heights of parents. It may be in the red book.

My DDs should end up at 5'10" & 5'2" according to this formula. DD1 is 15 and 5'9", DD2 is 12 and 4'7", so it may be a about right for them, but it can't be definite, there must be a significant margin of error as Moomoomie says.

I thought it was 2 for boys and 18 months for girls?

www.bbc.co.uk/health/tools/child_height_calculator/

my just turnbned 2 year old is 83 cm. My parents were told at 2 that my brother would be really small. He is 5 11.

Report
harkharkhark · 24/11/2012 17:54

Yes, wallace, my DS is coming up just shy of 83cm.

Who can say? My DH gets really pissed off about it, because he said he was tiny till he was a teenager and how can a chart/predictor really account for different people's trajectories.

Can't decide whether to agree, or to think he feels slightly defensive...

I read this and was a little upset as neither DS1 or DS2 would be much taller than me Sad - I am 5ft 8 and DH is 6ft 2 so I was kind of expecting my boys to be on the tall side.

I am really hoping that it is not true!

Report
DaPrincessBride · 24/11/2012 18:07

My DM says that you measure a boy at 2 and a half, and a girl at 2 - it was right with both myself and DB. Looks about right for DD - predicted at around 5'11, which is about same height as me.

Report
ceebeegeebies · 24/11/2012 18:15

I have just calculated their predicted adult height using the calculation in the red book based on mine and DH's height and they would both be on the 91st centile with a predicted height of 6ftish...however, it does say that they should border that centile from the age of 2.

DS1 has always been just on or above the 50th centile whilst DS2 has always been just on or below the 50th centile Hmm

Report
BikeRunSki · 24/11/2012 18:27

I thought it was 2 for girls and 3 for boys. DS was 83 cm at 2 and 100 at 3 (it was an
expensive year for clothes and shoes!). Which would make him 2m or 6'6" as an adult. Sounds tall, but the shortest man in my or DH's family for 3 generations is 6'2", my Dad and brother are 6'5" and I am not short at 5'8". At 4.2, DS is 110 cm and pretty much always the tallest of his peers.

Wow bike...that gives me hope!! I can't believe DS will be 100 at 3 (we are all fairly short) but there's time for a little bit of upward movement!!

I have just used this calculator and put DD's measurements in. It forecasts that she will be 5'5", not the 5'10" if I used the double your height measurement at age two.

Haylebop12 · 24/11/2012 18:34

Bikemy dd at 3.10 is 111 cm. and in 5-6 or 6-7 years clothes!
