Writhing one year old - a danger to self and others!

I'm sure I should know how to deal with this, what with it being my second child and all, but DS, who is just about to turn 1, has recently developed a violent averson to having his nappy changed or getting dressed or undressed. And when I say violent, I mean crazy writhing on the changing table, back arched, screaming full throttle - it's a sight to behold, and needless to say it's impossible to get a nappy on him in this state, or any clothes either. I've had to start changing and dressing him on the floor because then at least he can't fall, but it certainly hasn't changed his attitude to the whole thing. I try to comfort him, pick him for a cuddle and then try again, sing songs etc but nothing seems to work. My two questions are:

1. Why has this suddenly started happening over the last fortnight (to an otherwise extremely easy, contented and happy little boy)

2. What can I do about it?

That's all! Thanks so much for any advice; I'm getting pretty desperate.

V normal ime Mother so don't worry! Time to say goodbye to the changing table though and wonder when you can realistically start potty training

Watching with interest as 10m old DS has just started doing this and I've tried everything to make him stop!

The only thing that works is getting his 5 year old brother to come and sit with him, for some reason this calms him right down. Sadly this is not always an option as 5 year old is often at school/in bed!

Thanks, glad to know I'm not alone in this - thought there might be something wrong with him/me! Will give the sibling thing a go Mustafa, as his 4 year old sister is pretty good with him (although as you say not always practical!).

My eldest did this. Can't remember what we did. I vaguely remember putting lots of toys and books round her head.

Ds has been fine though so I'd forgotten all about it.

Plenty of distractions and toys to hold... it's a battle but ultimately one you have to persevere with, like brushing teeth. Best of luck!!

My 11mo does this too he's never liked a nappy change but now they take about 20 minutes each and he usually remains stood up hanging off the curtains while I try to hook the nappy on him. He screams and thrashes and bangs off everything nearby!!

I've tried pull ups but he's still not much better with those. In desperation I've stuck some fisher price apps on my iPhone and he sometimes will stay down while watching it but I don't like doing that.
