DS is coming up to 2 and he loves the Gruffalo and Gruffalo's child, Pants, anything with lift up flaps, anything with lots of colourful animals in it. BIL recently bought him the Baby that Roared, which I can highly recommend. DS really enjoys roaring through it.

Duck in a Truck is fantastic.
Also agree with Julia Donaldson recommendations though our favourites at this stage were
Sharing a Shell
Squash and a Squeeze
Chocolate Moose for Greedy Goose

My DD loves 'pants' and 'more pants' they would be great for a 2 year old boy too. They are rhyming books and a bit silly

Oh god yes, bloody Spot. Anything with vehicles in. DS2 is particularly keen on Monkey Puzzle at the mo. Oh, and poems - both of my boys have loved poem books at this age, and I think poetry is brilliant for their language development. We've got an old 'Golden Treasury' kids' poetry compendium with lots of pictures, that I used to read as a child, and they both love it.

Monstersaurs, is good, my son loves Brown Bear Brown Bear and because it is so simple he enjoys reading it to himself.
Any Julia Donaldson book goes down well, one of his favourites is Tiddler. He is also enjoying some DrSeuss books, Cat in the Hat, Mr Brown, Green Eggs and Ham.

You choose, by pippa goodhart, loads and loads and loads to talk about to develop language, it's not a story really but has been much loved in our house for years.

YY to You Choose. Our copy is falling apart because the boys love it so much. And YY to Brown Bear Brown Bear, too.

Usbourne first 1000 words has been a favourite here since DS (now 2.1) was given it for his first birthday, can see it continuing. It isn't a story, but provokes lots of conversation.

Also anything by Jez Alborough (of Duck in the Truck), and the Benedick Blathwayt (sp?) Little Red Engine and Dougal the Digger books.

Hairy Mclary series are absolutely brilliant

You Choose is wonderful at that age. My DS also loves Nick Sharatt's Shark In The Park.
Also Chocolate Mousse For Greedy Goose, Meg & Mog, Going On A Bear Hunt, Lucy Cousin's Hooray for Fish, A Train Goes Clickety Clack.
He is also getting quite into Topsy & Tim especially ones like going to the dentist or camping that he can relate to.

Mine's only 21 months, but these are his absolute favourites:

Flashing fire engines, and any other books by Tony Mitton and Ant Parker
Little Rabbit Foo Foo
Penguin by Polly Dunbar
The Snail and the Whale
No More EE-Yore by Lydia Monks
One Ted Falls out of Bed
Richard Scarry's ABC (this book is really brilliant, and has great inbuilt longevity)

All the stuff above and perhaps Peepo, but also the fantastic Naughty Bus.

My DS is 2.5. We love:
Little red train books
Bears in the night
Any Julia Donaldson ones
Usbourne diggers
One ted falls out of bed
No matter what

Mainly though he loves going to the library and choosing his own stories for the week. There are so many amazing kids stories.
