11 month old not sleeping...HELP!!!!

My 11 month old son has always been an amazing and predictable sleeper up until 2 weeks ago. He still has a bottle feed and goes down at the same time every night but wakes up up to 4 times per night (approx every 2 hours) screaming and crying. He has never done this before, in fact he has barely ever cried and his scream sounds desparate like he's in pain which he can't be (?) as he is totally fine and himself during the day.
I of course comfort him back to sleep (more recently in my own bed as I'm tired and fed up!) and try to put him back down in the cot but he then becomes wide awake again and sits/stands up and starts crying again. This cycle is ongoing and I'm at my wits end...have any of you mums had the same experience or do you know what I can try to get us back to our normal sleeping pattern?
He only has one nap now during the day around 11-1pm so it's not as if he's having too many naps. This isn't teething or wind.

hey hunny you poor thing it sounds awful! could it be his teeth? i know this affects alot of little ones at around this age and would explain the screaming and crying. Try giving him calpol around half an hour before bed to see if it makes any difference as it might relieve any discomfort while he's sleeping. Kai's the same when he's teething and he does only distressed with the pain at night times which is odd but it sounds like this! Kai's a bad sleeper anyway, but i know when its his teeth because as you said the cry is completely different xxx

I don't agree about giving calpol if it's not clear what is going on.
DS recently went through something similar - he's almost 1yo now. He was waking up several times during the night, crying suddenly and inconsolably as though he'd had a terrible dream. I was afraid that it was the beginning of night terrors, but it did stop (gradually) after about a week. I wonder if it is some sort of developmental stage.

Yep, my son (1 next week) has been going thru a poor Sleep phase since about 10.5 mths. I put it down to separation anxiety, the fact that he is desperately trying to walk ((my gentle little boy has turned into a maniac, bursting with energy and just desperate to move), teeth, and his cold and chesty cough!

It'll get better (soon, please, DS!!)

personally i dont see anything wrong with it. Babies cant tell us when they're in pain so a small teaspoon of calpol could be just what he needs and if not it isnt going to do him any harm x

Thanks for all your help ladies. I have been giving him calpol every night for the last 10 days as he has had the odd day of red cheek (suggesting teething)but it doesn't make a difference any more. Have just spoken to a health visitor though and whilst she says it's normal to start waking up and realising I'm not there she reccommends bulking up his diet with more carbs and more high calorie food to get him to sleep more soundly so that's what I'm gonna try. xx
