Hi everyone, my son is 3 weeks old today. For the past two days he has been really restless and constantly feeding. He is feeding well and putting on weight- he has put on 1lb 2oz since birth. He was getting into a feeding/sleeping routine but now he is awake until 1.30am and hardly sleeping in the daytime. I am exhausted and my husband is becoming quite agitated because he can't soothe the baby. The only way I can soothe him is by feeding him. Can anyone help or give advice on what may be wrong? Thanks April

It's the three week growth spurt - you are not doing anything wrong. Just feed him whenever he wants.
If you can, take him to bed for a couple days and get someone else to bring you tea and cake smile

This too shall pass

Feed, feed, feed!

Totally normal. It would be weird if he wasn't feeding all the time.

How are things now? Has he settled down at all?

Just wondered if you'd read this on growth spurts and Breastfeeding your newborn: what to expect in the early weeks?

Congratulations on your new baby too [thands].

Should have also said, when he is awake until 1.30pm, what is he doing? Is he screaming? Have you tried feeding him in your bed?

If he is crying in the evening, there is nothing wrong with doing lots of feeding, but if you husband wants a go at trying to settle him, get him to do this.

Can DH also help with things like nappy changes and bathtime and get him to read this.

Sounds like you are doing everything just rightsmile It is utterly exhausting. Our has not been sleeping well during the day and has been usually up until midnight after being awake and feeding all evening, but we are at week 7 (with number 2) and things are already starting to improve with regards to daytime sleep. DS1 was exactly the same. Hang in there! I usually ask DH to help burp him. He likes to sit and bounce on DH's lap or be held on DH's shoulder and have his back rubbed.

P.S. It is usual for newborns to sleep loads in the beginning then for things to appear to get worse after a few weeks due to growth spurts. Will hopefully improve for you both around 8-12 weeks.
