My DD will sit with her back against the wall/ door and repeatedly bang her head. its not really very hard {most of the time} but she has now started to try and do it when there is nothing behind her leading to falling backwards and hurting herdelf.

I would think about taking her to the doctor for her to have a look at, maybe - video DD doing it if you can as they never do things to order when you want them. Rhythmic behaviours can be a self-soothing thing if they're not being cuddled as much as they want, so you could try more physical contact from you, too.

Hi Spaceangel - my brother used to do this as a baby / little boy. I distinctly remember him as a toddler sitting on the sofa watching TV and banging his head. We used to call it "thumping". He also used to do it in bed, lying on his tummy and thumping his head on the pillow till he went to sleep.

My mother was told by the GP that it was a self-soothing thing, that he would eventually grow out of. And he did - he is now a perfectly normal 32yr old :)

I'd mention it to your GP and see what he/she says.
