Getting 12 month old to eat more than cheese

My 12 month old DS has been tricky to get to eat proper food. He loves cheese (cheese sauce with vegetables, cheese on toast etc) but is fussy with other savoury things apart from a couple of stew recipes. We are trying to help widen his repertoire (and rely less on cheese as a bribe to get him to try other foods). He loves fruit and porridge and yogurt so it is savoury things we need help with.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to start? It is so disheartening to cook things for him which he rejects straights away.

Thanks ladies!

my son's number one is pumpkin soup (and pumpkins are in season now!)- you chop the pumpkin (without the rind), cook it with some milk, stock, nutmeg and maybe ground coriander, some ground pepper. Once it's very soft, just blend it and add some cream. You can serve it with grated cheese, to entice your dh:). It's delicious for adults too. The taste is lovely, but also very mild, sweet almost-so maybe he'll like that.

A lot of babies I know seem to love sweet potato. Could you try sweet potato with other things in it - eg. Salmon, chicken? We use the Annabel Karmel books and she has some good recipes for the above.

My DD seemed to live off plain pasta, marmite sandwiches and mini tomatoes for at that age, it took her months to accept grated cheese on the pasta. But gradually she grew out of it- she is 9 now and eats a good variety, but is still cautious about new things. I would just keep trying to introduce new things but if he rejects them, try not to worry. He will survive on the limited diet he has now, and he will start eating more as he grows.
