When can they sing with a tune?

Not concerned, just interested. Despite knowing the words of every possible nursery rhyme and children's song, DD (just 2) doesn't make any attempt to 'sing' them, they're always chanted. I remember my niece singing 'Twinkle Twinkle' when she wasn't much older than 12 months. One of those hugely varying things I suppose.

I teach six and seven year olds, and not all of them can sing with a tune, so I really wouldn't worry just yet!

I'm a teacher too. DH thinks it's because he 'can't sing', but I'm sure it's not that! I just mean there's nothing other than a chant. Not expecting perfect pitch or anything.

Funny enough Ds was singing along to JLS this morning and I actually thought ooh that almost sounds in tune now, he is 5 and 1/2. Older Ds, 7 yr is still tone deaf like his Mum but he dosnt sing as much as the younger one.

Dd1 and ds did sing in tune from the beginning. Dd1 was particularly good that people used to comment on it when she was 15 months.
Dd2 didn't sing in tune until she was about 5, and now, at 7yo, is beginning to develop a really lovely alto voice.
Dh has perfect pitch and is very musical and said he couldn't sing in tune until he was about 12 or 13.

DD1 is starting to sing in tune now at 2.5. She is like your DD OP- knows the words of every single nursery rhyme and they escape at the funniest of times!

Thanks everyone. Yes, Debka, funny isn't it? Her favourite word is 'nightgown', from wee Willie Winkie and she likes to ask passers by if they have one!

DD is 2.4 and has been chanting (or should I say shouting) them for ages. Now, suddenly there's some change of note - not quite completely there yet, but some changes...

Dd has been singing in tune since she was 2, but then I'm a trained singer so there are both nature and nurture influences at play there.

Mine sing in tune, but I am a musician so that's cheating a bit. If you sing with her she will get the hang of it sooner rather than later.

Ds sang in tune from 13 months but at 2.2 is still not a great talker, one of these many variable things I guess. Singing with them does seem to help.
