I'd have guessed teething - or maybe some other sort of pain perhaps.

My 18 m.o. DS has recently started biting his wrist/forearm, - not as badly as your DD but I can see the bite marks when he stops. I think it's teeth with him, as he's chewing lots of things and his latch is uncomfortable when I bf him which always happened when he was teething before.

How about offering a non-food alternative to chew on?

I don't know whether children that young are always able to identify where / if something hurts. IME teeth pain can feel more like generalised achiness around the head than actually in the mouth.

Can't help, but just wanted to say DD is doing something similar at 2.3 - not drawing blood, but chewing fingers and biting the backs of her hands/wrists till you can see toothmarks.

The only teeth she hasn't got are the back molars, but they don't seem to be coming through.

I just say 'Hand out' and she's pretty good at taking her hand away. Maybe it's just a sensory thing that they'll grow out of!
