My DD is 22 months and doesn't speak, the only thing she can say is ma ma, da da and more other than that she doesn't speak. She understands everything you say to her and listens to everything so when I am talking to DS she is listening and often acts on what i am talking about to him, for instance if I say to him it's time to put his shoes on, she will go straight upstairs and get his shoes and bring them down to him. She can hear fine and make her self understood easily but she just will not speak, it's driving me mad! Did anyone else have this and if so what can you do to make them try to speak?

my ds is 22 months and all he says is woo wooo when he sees a train. Seriously, that is all! Don't worry, some just start later, but they are taking it all in.

If you're very worried you could ask your GP or HV to refer you to a Speech and Language Therapist (SALT). But 22 months is still very little and they do develop at such different rates - she'll be picking up other skills while her peers are focussing on speech. They'll all catch up with each other.

My DD was like this - she had lots of signs that she came up with herself in place of speaking. She didn't start putting words together until she was about 27 months. It wasn't anything that we did, she just suddenly started.
