20 month old headbanging!

I think this is the first glimpse of the "terrible twos" !

My 20 month old ds (pfb) has some big tantrums sometimes, usually I just ignore or distract him which works well but over the last few days hes started hitting his head on the floor or wall while hes tantruming! Today I put him down for his nap at the usual time and he started hitting his head on the side of the cot and is now covered in red marks on his forehead!

I don't know how to deal with this, I can't let him hurt himself but if I give in to him that will just give him the message that tantrums will get him what he wants.

Any advice would be gratefully received, I feel totally out of my depth here!

TIA

my oldest used to headbang on the kitchen floor so I just moved him into the front room (carpeted) and then ignored

it IS a stage, repeat 'this too shall pass'

Thanks boysarelikedogs, its good to know others have been through this and come out the other side!

Great idea about the carpet, I'll do that in future but I don't know what to do when he does it in the cot! Usually he goes to sleep with no problem but occasionally if hes overtired or thinks hes missing out on something he has a tantrum before he goes to sleep and hits his head on the bars!
