Following on from thread about nightmare bedtimes, I wonder if I'm putting them to bed too early, maybe I'm in denial!

Have a dd 7 and ds 5 and we send them to their room at 7.30pm - is this too early?

my ds aged four used to go as good as sold but now he won't. He insists on going to sleep on the sofa and I have to carry him (a ton weight) up to bed - then he sleeps fine. He has a mass paddy if I try to take him to bed but he is usuall asleep for 730 to 8 ish
I would say 730 is probably too early for your older DD - maybe 830 would be more appropriate for her age.

7.30-7.45pm is normal in our house for my two (7 & 3). Sometimes 7yo gets to lie in bed and read (after I've read the bedtime stories) when she says she's not tired. I think it depends on the child and when they need to be up in the morning etc. I work 3 days per week and on these days the DCs need to be up early to get to childminder so I couldn't have them up much later really.

DS 4 goes to bed at 8.00. Can't put him to bed any earlier as have to fit in dinner, bath and 30 mins play from when we get in.

DD's aged 4.5 in bed for 7 each night sometimes half 6 if really tired, they get up at 6am though!

Notinmykitchen Thu 09-Jun-11 19:01:57

I think it really does depend on the child, they are all so different, and need different amounts of sleep. My DS, 3.6 goes any time between 6.30 and 8 depending on what he has been doing, and how tired he is.

7.30 here. At that age (which is similar to my DC) they need about 11 hours sleep still and they are usually passed out by 8 and up at 7. Not sure what age this changes to later but I am guessing it will just increase gradually to about 9pm bedtime when they start senior school.

Would have been late in our house - I think we started bath and bed about 6.30 back then. Probably was lights out at 7.30, at least for the 7yo. They had to be up by 7am and needed (still do!) their sleep.

DialsMavis Thu 09-Jun-11 20:33:45

DD (7months) between 6.30 and 7pm
DS (8.5) in bedroom reading by 7.30, lights out 8pm. Later at weekends for DS as I like to lie in.
DD wakes between 7.30 and 8am, DS between 7 and 8

Seona1973 Thu 09-Jun-11 20:37:14

dd 7 - 8pm on school nights and 9pm at the weekend
dd 4 - 7.30pm nursery nights and between 8 and 8.30pm at the weekend

Dinosaurhunter Thu 09-Jun-11 21:36:39

Ds 4 goes to bed between 6 45-700 but wakes at 6am which we don't mind as we always know we have a whole evening of peace !

dikkertjedap Thu 09-Jun-11 22:13:48

DD (5) goes to bed at 19.00h, she reads and I read a story, asleep at 19.30h. (I did have to buy new curtains to keep light out, which has made a huge difference as she wakes up later as well).

Ds - 2. Bed time 6pm
Dd - 6 Bed time 7pm

Both completely worn out by bedtime. Ds frequently falls asleep in his dinner!

Dd will read or imaginatively play on her own for an hour or so but goes to sleep when she's tired.

Kids need a lot of sleep.

WorzselMummage Thu 09-Jun-11 22:20:06

Dd wakes at about 7. We usually have to wake ds ourselves at 7.45.

Niece & nephew in one house go to bed at 7pm after a bath and milk- they are 1yr & 3yrs

Nephew in other house goes to bed at 6pm after a bath and story - 2yrs old

OddBoots Thu 09-Jun-11 22:22:50

My two need a lot of sleep.

dd (8) is in bed by 7.30 most nights and reads until just after 8pm when she falls asleep until I wake her at 7.20am.

ds (11) goes to his room around 8pm but he reads, plays games, lego, k'nex etc until aout 9pm and I get him up at 7am.

When they want, within reason. Within reason is up to 10pm or later for my DS1 if he's in the middle of something.

They do regulate themselves well and are usually fast asleep at around 8.30pm.

I HE though so they can sleep late/nap as suits.

They are 3 and 6.

OvO, out of interest, why no bedtime routine? Is your older boy getting enough sleep - he's only 6. They need at least 10-12 hours a day at that age. If he's up at 7am for school don't you have a very tired little boy on your hands?

Kiwiinkits Fri 10-Jun-11 01:05:16

Ohhhh sorry I just re-read your post. You home educate. Take it back.

DD1 (7) in bed by 8pm, although is made to have at least on early night a week, which is bed at 7pm
DD2 (2) 7pm every night although is known to have a tantrum every now and then about this, she is ignored and usually asleep by 7.30

tinytears1 Fri 10-Jun-11 10:24:36

DS1 (6) between in his bedroom doing 'stuff' around 8pm and goes to sleep about 9, then gets up 7.30ish. He finds it hard to switch off and would stay up much later if we let him, but is never tired during the day. I wish he would go to sleep earlier but just isn't tired.
DD2 (4) goes to sleep about 8 and gets up 7.30ish.

prolificwillybreeder Fri 10-Jun-11 12:08:54

DS1 goes to bed by 7 after story, bath and milk. Asleep by 7:30 some nights 8.
