according to this he should have full fat products, plenty of fibre and not much juice/squash

Thanks ladies do you think they mean brown bread, not white, and whole fruit not fruit pouches etc?? He has full fat yogart and milk. Its been going on for months....actually his nappies before potty training were yuck but he also went through a phase of constipation too so who knows!

counter-intuitive but do you think he is still constipated?

when they get 'backed up' the fresh poo runs around the 'block' and with the lump of poo sitting near the exit possibly distending the bowel and bumhole this mean lots of leaks and streaks

We have this with DS aged 2.8. Posted a while ago as nappies were horrendously smelly and mostly very soft, often explosive diarrhea (have a search on my name, probably oct or nov, as i got some good advice). Tried potty training a couple of weeks ago and he gets it, but when he has particularly explosive nappies he just can't get there in time :(

Been to doctors with it - ruled out infection, now been referred to bowel specialist at children's hospital because of family history of coeliac but they will also look at other things.

I personally don't think it is coeliac but is more likely a reaction to fruit - always worse after his 3 days at nursery where they eat lots of fruit so I reckon it's that. Debating whether to start cutting back on fruit myself. Have stopped all fruit juice and squash, although he never had much of that anyway.

Anyway they told me not cut out wheat while we wait for coeliac results because they need to see the impact of the wheat on him IYSWIM.

Interested in the constipated idea - how would I get his bowel 'clear' of any blockages?

maybe you could cut out wheat for a fortnight and see if it makes a difference? i'd be wary of cutting out dairy, think a lactose intolererance would have presented earlier on anyway seen as they start on milk

Try a homeopath.

My friend's DD had this for several weeks, trips to the doctor were useless, they just told her that it 'would pass'. DD not eating, explosive nappies, very sore bum etc.

The homeopath gave her something to take and wwithin a few days poo back to normal and she was eating again.

If you are interested I will find out exactly what remedy was given.

ttbmp2

Infant probiotics from healthfood shop and camomila to settle the stomach.

It's certainly worked a treat for my friend, but maybe advisable to make an appointment with a homeopath first.

In her case the problem seemed to have been caused by a prolonged course of antibiotics - has your DS had any lately?

Hope you get it sorted soon!

Lactose inteolerance can be temporary. If he's had a bug, the lining of the intestins can get inflamed and cause an imbalance in the bacteria in the gut. That's what happened to DS when he was little. The only way to find out is to stop dairy for a couple of days - if he gets better, then you know that it was caused by dairy. It was really easy to figure out with DS as he got better as soon as I stopped dairy. I re-introduced dairy after just a week or so and he was fine afterwards. Probiotics really do help so live yogourt plus a supplement called 'abc dophilus' (it's acidophilus bacteria that is in some live yogourt). It's expensive though.

We used soya milk, but it was only for one week so there's no real danger of lacking in anything.

I'm not a professional so please check with your GP if the problem gets worst!!!
