according to delia you can freeze classic sponges, but this is for a special event, does it come out really perfect or pretty good?

I regularly freeze sponge cakes. Once defrosted you can't tell that it has been frozen. So the answer is that the cake is as fresh as if it had just been baked.

I tend to open freeze the cake and then wrap it in foil once frozen solid.

I freeze most of my sponge cakes before I use them. Makes them extra moist and easier to cut/ice/decorate.
I Wrap in clingfilm then foil and a carrier bag. Never had a problem yet.

You can freeze them iced Purple. I always do. Buttercream freezes beautifully.
