Ophelia - soon to be chavtastic?

What is the likelihood of Ophelia going ?downmarket? in the next 5 or so years?

I err towards classic English names (Jemima, Lucinda, Harriet?) but my husband who, although has lived in the UK since birth, is of Indian origin and is really not keen.

Ophelia is the only name we can agree on though I have a slight concern that it may be become a little chavtastic in the future? Am I being paranoid?

Oh and by the way I am very aware of the literary connection and not at all bothered! After all, was only fiction

Just goes to show how literary my mind is, my thoughts went immediately to Ophelia the prostitute in Trading Places.

It doesn't sound like a name that will become chavvy (horrible word) to me, I don't know of any Ophelias in real life at all thus far.

fine as long as your surname isn't Bottom.

No don't worry it will always be a posh name

MarshaBrady Sun 30-May-10 16:04:19

You should be fine.

janeite Sun 30-May-10 16:09:09

I think it will be fine - but I like Harriet better!

Ophelia could definitely fall into the trying-too-hard trap.

Beautiful, although can't imagine it on a baby, sorry Pixie. Just one of those names that one grows into smile

- roadie for heavy metal band wink

Not sure about "chav" - but it'll certainly depend upon accent.

Oh feel yer...

skihorse Sun 30-May-10 17:54:02

What if she marries Mr. Cox? shock

Apphia Sun 30-May-10 17:58:41

Goodness really wouldn't want to be considered as 'trying too hard'! It honestly is the only name we could agree on.

Not too worried about it being an adult name, i'm guessing we would shorten it too Effie or something.

Pixie, can you share what your other children are called? I may find some inspiration!

UnquietDad Sun 30-May-10 18:00:49

Ed Balls' sister is called Ophelia.

(Not really.)

Other options (depending on how much I can twist my husbands arm) are:

It's a minefield this baby naming game isn't it!

Jemima, Ottilie and Clementine are all wonderful. I think Ottilie is actually much nicer to say than Ophelia - which I always hear in a Carry On kind of way...I'll feel ya.....
