I met a really sweet girl on the bus today with this teeny baby it it's pram. I got chatting to her and asked the little girls baby's name....Amarus.
She told me she had made it up herself as she wanted something unusual.
Why did no one tell her? She clearly had no idea of it's meaning.

Amorous: feeling up for it.

Proper dictionary definition

Couldn't a kinder interpretation (for a little girl) be 'full of love' or am I being naive here. Or if it's pronounced 'am-ah-rus' not quite the same (okay very near I'll shuddup).

Amorous - derived from the Latin 'amor' = love, so I think its a very sweet meaning, a bit like like Amabel (which also meams lovable). Yes, perhaps the -ous sounds a little masculine though. But I don't think it is bad.

It does sound quite pretty, until you think of the possible consequences ... "Hi I'm Amarus" (sic) could get strange reactions. Like my American aquaintance who had to be gently told not to warmly approach English women with the greeting "Hi, I'm Randy"

Grimma has made an excellent point - there are names already out there which can sound just as bad!

It's Amaras though, not amorous.
