I met a lovely little Greta at the weekend and now I can't stop thinking about it.

I think I prefer it to my current favourite Eliza.

WDYT?

I love the look of it written down but I'm not sure how I'd pronounce it - 'gretta' or 'greeta'?

Eliza is lovely too. How about Frieda or Lena?

I have a Greta we pronounce it Gretta which I'm sure is right but lots of people do say Greeta, even after I've just said "this is Gretta" but I can't really get in a lather about it!

Other similar names (if you're going with a theme): Astrid, Ingrid, Freya (popular), Heidi (makes me sing the theme tune in my head when i hear it but if we have another DD I think it might be the one!) they're the ones on our list anyway

I know one of each, have just recently met the Greta (pronounced Gretta). I love them both.

ISNT - funny as heidi was on our list too - but i would never have thought of them as a similar type of name. Interesting!

It's my name I've had a lifetime of people mis-spelling and mispronouncing it (I'm Gretta) but it gets me noticed as I have always been the only one in my class, my office etc.

Personally, I prefer Eliza (it on my list if I ever have another girl) but does anyone ever like their own name?

It's my mum's name. I think it's lovely, it's pronounce Gretta, but everyone calls her Greeta.
She does get fed up of explaining to people who think shes called Rita.
My dh really wants her to get a job in Asda, so he can hear her say "Hello my names Greeta and I'm your greeter."!!

Why do people pronounce it greeta? I always thought it was gretta, and am fairly sure that's the correct way to pronounce it, but 9 people out of 10 say "greeta" when I introduce DD.

It was greta "gretta" garbo surely, which is the famous one.

Any ideas?

I've no idea why people say greeta, Greta is much nicer.

Here in Germany it's pronounced something like 'graeta'. Almost like 'grater' - but with the 'r' pronounced right at the back of the throat, so maybe that's where the long vowel has snuck in. To me it definitely sounds like a German name.

I guess the more popular it gets in the UK, the more people will pronounce it the British way!

Maybe they are doing it on purpose, to punish me for choosing "forrin" names, rather than proper english ones

I know a 5 year old Italian Greta. It was cute when she was a baby and a really great name on an older child too. I think its lovely.

I think they pronounce it similar to the German pronunciation - graeta with a rolled R.

Mrsvik - sort of like "greytah"? I have heard that as well - I used to work with a lot of German people so maybe that was where... This greeta stuff is just bananas though.

Lovely name. Maybe you could spell it Gretta to avoid any confusion!
