Interesting comments afterwards. Agree that most don't seem to know that Jack was originally a diminutive of John. Some purists don't think it should be a name in its own right at all.

Ruth is a solid, no nonsense name. Not for me but IMO fine.

oh I like it

was on the list for dd as it's feminine but unfrilly and hard to shorten

also considered Rachel, Laura, Sally, Alice, and Zoe for similar reasons if they appeal too

My niece is Ruth (18) .. it is very nice. And as for getting confused with Rachel and Rebecca... errr... no.
