Trad boys name help - we're picky, though....

We finally agreed on ds' name when I was in labour (I got my choice grin). But I want to have the boy's name ready (we have a girl's name, but it should be a boy) before the cs. DH just says "I'll think about it" whenever I suggest a name.

But then we are quite picky - these are our criteria:

* Can't begin with R or S or N
* Prefer traditional names
* Not too overtly Christian (ie Josiah) because I'm a vicar and that's enough playground teasing, I think.
* Can't be the name of a friend / relative / someone we didn't like at school
* We need to like all the nicknames
* We need to be able to yell it or shortened version out in the supermarket or across the footy pitch
* Can't be in the top boys 50 names from the last couple of years

So far we're not doing well on finding names that we both think fit....Any suggestions are welcome.

To be fair, Kyte, how can we avoid the names of your friends, rellys etc? You haven't told us.

Why can't it be in top 50 from last 2 years? hmm

Stuck.

Gideon - too much?!
Gregory/Greg - too papish for a vicar ? grin
Dominic/Dom - Christian and Jewish I think?
Victor - love this one! too smug?!
Howard/Howie - love this, very cute but a proper name too.
Marcus - love this one. Great Roman Classic
Leo - a/a
Peter - classic but unusual.
Donald - quirky classic
Guy - underused alternative to max?

Pity you said no R or S names as I love Richie and Saul too.

I like Christopher, but my cousin is called that

Liking a lot of the names you're coming up with, I'm writing a long list to present to dh, so keep them coming.

seeker Mon 12-Oct-09 18:11:23

Don't forget Patrick!

Is Adam too Christian?

Timothy

Peter

Simon

Gregory

Sorry - they mostly seem to be Biblical!

Ivykaty44 Mon 12-Oct-09 18:20:44

my dd's would have been Christopher Michael, I didn't suggest it as it is a religious name grin

MadBadandDangerousToKnow Mon 12-Oct-09 18:25:49

How non-Christian do they need to be? Are all saints' names out, for example, or are we only talking about the more 'out there' names like Malachi and Ezekiel?

Peter and David are hardly used these days and must be due for a revival.

Miles
Anthony
Cornelius
Barnaby
Jonathan
Laurence

QueensShilling Mon 12-Oct-09 18:27:44

I have found John fits the bill very well (but perhaps too Christian for you?).
* DS is the only John in his year, actually the only child we know called John.
* Traditional
* Easy to shoutgrin
* Doesn't need to be shortened.

MadBadandDangerousToKnow Mon 12-Oct-09 18:28:34
