DC1 is 5 days old and we can't quite decide between Orla, Iona (pronounced the Welsh way Yona), Nia (pronounced Knee-ah). Any suggestions for middle names that go with any of these 3

All lovely names!

Why don't you choose a family name for a middle name?

Congratulations by the way!

DD was almost Nia but DH felt it was too close to his dad's name (Neil). Nia Elisabeth works well.

Shame she wasn't born in September as Iona (or Nia) Medi would have been lovely.

Iona/Nia Elin
Iona/Nia Elen
Iona/Nia Gwawr (is the 'Dawn' bit of your name significant?)

We have 'an' Orla Grace and she really suits her name, or I should probably say her name really suits her; she is placid but very quietly determined too! We are delighted to have gone with this choice.

Orla, I love it. Don't like Nia sorry, very boring in Wales & millions of them. Otherwise I quite like Iona

Iona like the Scottish island is very pretty. Iona said the Welsh way is IMVHO horrific. Please don't use it and as for the Gwawr suggestion !!!! When I met my next door neighbour and she introduced herself I had to get her to repeat it 4 times. I had no idea what she said. It is one of the worst Welsh girls names I have heard yet.
I like Seren - Welsh for star.
How about Orla Seren ?
Orla has the advantage that it will be pronounced correctly wherever you are. Iona will be pronounced incorrectly if you want it to be Yona and Nia can be pronounced Ny-ah.
Yes go for Orla

I love the name Orla but my DH has vetoed it because there was once a woman called Orla on Big Brother whose big boobs are firmly implanted in his memory. When he hears Orla, he hears boobs. I have told him that the image of his own daughter would be enough to dispel that stupid memory, but he won't have it! Jealous you can use it!

Orla Grace
Orla Rose
Orla Beth

Smac - as my daughter would say 'how rude!' Iona said the Welsh way is in no way horrific (and no, it isn't my name) and I dread to think what your neighbour's name was. I don't particularly like 'Gwawr' as a name but thought it may appeal to the OP as her name has Dawn in it and gwawr is dawn in Welsh but hey-ho, each to their own.

Also, Nia is never (in Welsh at least) pronounced Ny-ah unless you're saying it wrong!

I quite agree mejon but on MN we are allowed to be rude! I do think Iona pronounced the Welsh way is horrific and I am entitled to that opinion and yes Gwawr is my neighbours name. My Scottish ear is taking some time to adjust to the Welsh tongue and I am perfectly aware that Nia is knee-ah in Wales however in Scotland I had only ever come across Nye-ah so I'm going to continue to be rude and stick my tongue right out at you!

Report
mejon · 02/12/2009 15:11

as I couldn't find a sticky-outy-tongue or raspberry blowing emoticon!
