Boys name shortlist - opinions please

We are really struggling to find a boy's name for DC2 (got lots of lovely girls names in reserve). We have a shortlist, but to TBH are unsure about all of them... So come on give me your worst, and point out the obvious ridicule DS will get which I have missed!

The list conforms to the rules:
Not too popular. I have a popular name and I spent my life also being known by my physique (Tall / Young XXXX), job, origin, sir name etc; and I hate it. So I want something unusual - but that then becomes more difficult / controversial...
Our Sir name is short and abrupt, but we think these go (unlikely to be abbreviated / sound OK)
To put in a family context (and probably give away my RL persona): It's the son of a Rufus, and the brother to a Tristan

Hugo
Dean
Miles
Adam
Lawrence
Andrew
Kieran

Be honest - better now than later!!

Hugo and miles goes with Rufus and Tristan, but Adam and Andrew are the nicest, I think.

I like miles and adam.

Hugo- is posh. Are you?
Dean- is now in his 40s because he was at school with me in the 80s.
Miles- wears a beige mac and slacks and has bad breath
Adam- is lovely
Lawrence- I find Lawrence a bit clumsy...I can't imagine a baby one
Andrew- lovely, classy, timeless, elegant, due a comeback
Kieran- s'ok, but there are a lot....

They are a mixed bunch.

I think Hugo, Miles, Adam and Lawrence go well with Tristan. I prefer Adam and Lawrence.

Dean was very popular in the 70's and not necessarily in a good way.

Kieran is okay but doesn't sound like a brother of Tristan.

I would go for Lawrence.

I love miles

Actually I agree about Dean!
Do you think Adndrew is now in his 30s / 40s though...?

Kieran and Dean really don't go with Tristan style-wise.

Hugo and Miles go very well with Tristan

but as I wouldn;t have chosen Tristan I prefer Adam, Lawrence or Andrew. However thinking of how they will inevitably be shortened (Andy and Loz...) I would choose Adam.

Dislike all except Hugo. A poor show in comparison to Rufus, set the bar high with that one!!

What about Reuben?

Report
scarletlilybug · 06/10/2009 11:02

I think they're all fine, though am less kean on Dean and Kieran.

Andrew is a nice name and probably due a revival - but I'm not too sure about the inevitable Andy nn.

I'd go for Hugo.

Much as I like Reuben, I think Rufus and Reuben sounds a bit daft somehow...

I like Hugo, Miles, Lawrence and Adam.

Tristan and Hugo, Miles or Lawrence.

We too have a short surname and seem to have similar taste in names .

We chose 2 syllable names for our children to match our 1 syllable surname, names that so far haven't been shortened .

I really like Tristan (was on our list too), and from your list I prefer Hugo or Miles. Other names I love (especially with a short surname and matching Tristan) are

Quentin

and

Lucas

Hugo...awful
Dean...like
Miles....dislike
Adam....OK
Lawrence...awful
Andrew...dislike
Kieran...love it

annasmami we do have similar taste.
Lucas didn't quite make the shortlist due to being No 37 in the National Stats last year - but now I look again I see Adam is at 32, so I'm inconsistent!!

DH isn't sure on Quentin - if we have a Tristan and a Quentin he thinks we will have to send them to private school...!! Also I can't help thinking Tarantino

Freddie.
Stanley.
Borris.
Hector.

Thanks Startwhores
DH vetoed Fred - as it (apparenlty) sounds like a 'coal miner' with our sir-name (??)
I like Stanley, although Tristan's Grandad calls hin Stan-stan (we could get him to stop this)
Borris really appeals to me...
I have also tried Hector on DH several times, but he pulls a face - I may keep trying!

Some lovely names on here!

With Tristan, these would be my favourite (2 syllable) names:
Hugo
Hector
Miles
Quentin
Lawrence
Reuben

Love Hugo and Lawrence - how about Hughie or Lawrie (bit more baby friendly!)

wildstrawberryplace · 06/10/2009 20:55

I think Hugo goes best, it goes perfectly with Rufus and Tristan.

Andrew.

Hugo - isn't there a character in something called Hugo-a-go-go? Sorry!
Dean - nope
Miles - no opinion really
Adam - like it
Lawrence - love it
Andrew - good solid name
Kieran - hate it

Tristan is fabbo and I think Lawrence best lives up to it.

I love Andrew.

I only like Kieran spelt Ciaran.

Hugo is nice but not for me.

I don't like Miles - the sound not any connotation.

Adam and Lawrence are okay.

Oh, nearly forgot about Dean. Really?
