I want to change my name - help with suggestions please

My name is Alexandra, but am always Alex which I hate and find that most people assume I am male. Am moving to the North East from the South East Coast in a short while and will know no one so seems like an ideal time to do a name change.

Considered using my middle name - Margaret - bit its too much of a mouthful and don't like Maggie. Makes me think of Thatcher and sounds like haggie, still quite harsh i think.

Would like something more femnine, no female versions of male names but not too twee and little girly please. Surname begins with Ell.... so have to be careful with end of first name. For example Claire Ell... will run together to sound like Clairell.... but Susie Ell... would work.

All help / suggestions appreciated. If it helps i am 40, dark hair, slim, short, more intovert than extrovert.

Gosh, I think Alexandra is lovely! Shame it hasn't worked for you. Could still derive from it these names: Sandy, Sandra, Lexxi, Peggy (16yo Peggy lives 2 doors away from us).

If you do change your name by deed poll then please keep Alexandra as a middle name, I think it is classy and beautiful

Thanks for all the suggestions, very interesting reading the replies. I do really like Lexie but not sure if its 'me'. Somehow I imagine its for someone a lot more outgoing - and young. Something to think about more.

Would definately keep both my names and add new name on the front.

I love the name Alexandra - and Lex or Lexie. How about Alexa - my favourite girls name and you could get away with it as a derivative (sort of) of your actual name without having to change it?

If you change to Susie, you will have the inevitable conversation of 'is is short for Susan, Susanna etc'. And you will also become just one of several Sue/Susan/Susie in any setting [weary voice of experience]
