What about Adela & Marcella?

Cortina · 30/09/2009 06:49

I've always liked the name but have only come across one Adela before.

I think it's in Jane Austen and an old English name?

Also what about Marcella?

Thanks!

Isn't adela the little french girl from Jane Eyre? I like adela but not marcella.

Adele in Jane Eyre, never heard Adela.

Marcella sounds Spanish/South American to me.

not my cup of tea either sorry

Miss Adela Quested in A Passage To India, I knew it was in 'literature'!

To me that's up there with Miss Lucy Honeychurch in name niceness!

Am sure there are more iconic Adelas?

So why not more popular?

I think Marcella would invite pronunciation confusion - 'Mar-chella' or 'Mar-sella'. Not really sure about it either - sounds like Marsala wine.

Yes prefer Adele to Adella.

Also it makes me think of Marsellus Wallace.

I really like Marcella - pronounced Mar-sella.

Not keen on Adela, but I quite like Adele.

I like Adele. Adela seems weaker round the edges. I can't quite describe what I mean. Adele is nicer, more precise.

Marsella is fussy. Marianne would be much more my style. Marianne Stella would be gorgeous. Marsella for short?!

ps, what do you think of Graciela? I like that one. SPanish version of Grace. I love it. Bit like Marcella but nicer (imo!)

Not keen on Graciela (could be Gracy-Ella entering territory of made-up-names) although I can see it's not. Maybe if in Spain.

Like Celia sort of but shades of earnest, lumpen librarian about it.

Adela to me is now Miss Adela Quested and not weak at all. In fact Adele sounds harsh to me.

Lots to think about now. Thanks.

I love Adela but not Marcella. The Adela that I know is muslim, I think in my baby name book it is listed as having arab origins. It is a beautiful name.

If you lie Celia, what about Cecilia or Cecily as alternatives?

Adela sounds made uip.

Marcella is lovely. Also, Marcel for a boy. Nice.

How can Adela be made up? It's in a Passage to India so was used in the 19th Century. Am sure I've come across it in Austen too.

Seems to have an ill deserved reputation.

Thanks for comments.

I adore Adela - first encountered it in Lorca's play La Casa de Bernada Alba , she was the youngest sister who was a bit minxy - I liked her the most.

Would love to have used it for myself only our surname also starts with 'Ad-'...boo

Why not? Adela Addison, Adkins, Admore, all would be fine

I'm pretty sure there are no Adela's in Austen - unless it's in one of her juvenalia?

Never heard of Adela in Austen as far as I can remember.

However, one of the nicest pupils I've ever taught was called Adela, so I think it's lovely.

No, I know who Adela is.

There's a version of Sanditon, completed by 'a Lady', in which Adela is the rich and chilly West Indian heiress.

I thought there was a minor character Adela in Austen somewhere? But might be somewhere else.

Really? Haven't read it for about 20 years and can't remember anything about it!

Still a pretty name though. My niece is Adele.

Mr Rochester's ward in Jane Eyre was Adele but I don't think there is an Adele in Jane Austen's works. I like the names Adele and Adela a lot.
