Is this combination asking for trouble?

DS is Hugo and DC2 is due any day now. I really like Ralph if baby is a boy, but has occurred to me that Hugo and Ralph may be subject of micky-taking (particularly if later have a girl and call her Coco...)

Would you make the fashion designer association or have I been thinking about this for much too long?

I think that Hugo and Ralph are just about ok, but Coco is really taking it a bit too far.

Ralph is a name for vomit in my area. smile

babybillandsplodge Mon 28-Sep-09 18:27:54

I love the name Ralph, absolutely love it - but my brother told me the same thing as Littlefish and it has put me off completely sad.

Ralph is the name of a penis in Judy Blume's Forever. I'm pretty sure most women of my generation would snigger at the name if they were Judy Blume readers as a teen.

Oh yes, I remember Ralph from Forever! That book did the secret rounds of our girls school for a few years!

ralph malph

Vomit? shock Is it a noun or verb or both? Do you say "Mind that bit of Ralph on the pavement" or "Please excuse me, I'm going to Ralph..."?

And I'd completely forgotten about Forever.

Back to the drawing board methinks...

Ralph is a verb

cyteen Mon 28-Sep-09 21:13:01

Sounds too much like Huey and Ralph, i.e. two different euphemisms for puking.

liliputlady Mon 28-Sep-09 22:16:07

I hadn't heard of either of those associations with the name "Ralph" - shame as it's a lovely name.

What about Raif or Rory as alternatives?

DH says Ralph and Huey for being sick...never really understood why.

Plonker Tue 29-Sep-09 00:08:33

Yup, ralph is vomitting here too (NW England)

Think it's to do with the noises you make (TMI!!)

juneybean Tue 29-Sep-09 00:51:28

Never heard of Ralph as vomtting. But it makes me think of Ralph Wiggum off the Simpsons and he's a bit dim...

thumbwitch Tue 29-Sep-09 00:59:44

ditto for the vomiting on both counts (my 3rd year student nickname was Huey... you can guess why)

But I wouldn't have made the fashion connection in a million years without you telling me - even the Coco didn't do it! blush

According to this source, Bert is another one...

Yes definitely pronounce it Rafe not Ralf

Ozziegirly Tue 29-Sep-09 03:04:22

Ralph is definitely vomiting or penis.

Rafe is cute though. But don't spell it Ralph or you will spend your time saying "no, it's Rafe actually" and people will do this hmm behind your back.

Raphael shortened to Rafe is nice.

MmeLindt Tue 29-Sep-09 07:29:39

Do none of you know Billy Connolly? He was the one with the Ralph and Huey jokes.

pointydoug Tue 29-Sep-09 18:30:44

ralph pronounced rafe is poncetastic

VictorMeldrew Tue 29-Sep-09 18:34:06

You can't call the poor child Ralph

Victor is nice wink

Tomatefarcie Tue 29-Sep-09 18:43:58

Moneyspider, your comments at 20:57 made me burst out laughing. Hilarious.

Ralph is used here as a verb, as in "someone's ralphed all over the back of my dress".

What about Dior, Lauren, Chanel or Diesel? grin
