...........just found out by text. Evie, bit sad TBH as DH said well we can't use that then! Surley we can though??

TheCrackFox Wed 16-Sep-09 19:23:43

Just use it and give her the middle name "Wethoughtofitfirst". That will teach them. grin

Tambajam Wed 16-Sep-09 19:24:10

You can use it. Just come back quickly with a 'Congratulations! Great name! It's on our list too. We love it etc'

duelingfanjo Wed 16-Sep-09 19:26:20

I would just use it.

VanillaIce Wed 16-Sep-09 19:26:53

Had you actually told your friend that this was the name you were definitely going with?

If so, then I would be most miffed and would definitely go ahead and use it too. I would text back and say "Lovely name - we're still going to use it for ours though - you were warned!" grin

tryingtobemarypoppins Wed 16-Sep-09 19:27:35

I texted back "Lovely! Our first choice too, there may be two little Evie's!" was that ok???
THEN I SHOUTED AT DH!

tryingtobemarypoppins Wed 16-Sep-09 19:28:26

I didn't say we were definitely going with, I just gave her my top 3, and it was top!

LOLOL at CrackFox

Good response marypoppins

tryingtobemarypoppins Wed 16-Sep-09 19:30:49

Yes I loved your middle name suggestion CrackFox!

HigherThanAWombat Wed 16-Sep-09 20:09:25

You can still use it. And you can't 'pinch' a name.

Tidey Wed 16-Sep-09 20:16:11

True, you can't pinch a name. Neither can you reserve it. You can, however, feel very hurt when someone close to you uses the name you have chosen and told them about. I told my best friend the name I would use if DC2 was a girl, and she then used the name for her new dog. Ridiculous, I know, but then I felt like I couldn't use it when DD arrived.

I hope you can either get used to the idea of two Evies or that you love the other names on your list just as much.

Georgimama Wed 16-Sep-09 20:16:13

Oh, I think you should sue, obviously.

tummytickler Wed 16-Sep-09 20:21:41

Evie is quite popular though - i could understand if it was Ursula or something!
Could you call your dd Eve, Evangeline, Evelyn and then use Evie as a nn. I prefer Evie as a nn tbh, and you can still use the name you love whilst using a different name form your friend iyswim

tryingtobemarypoppins Wed 16-Sep-09 20:25:05

I do like Eva......is that the right spelling? Also like Lily and Poppy, but surname is Williams????

Tidey she named her dog after your choice!!!!!!! OMG what a cow!!!!!!

Georgimama Wed 16-Sep-09 20:26:56

By the way, there have beeen multiple threads about similar situations with very similar names. Choose something else, your daughter will thank you for not being the sixth Evie/Evelyn/Eva etc in her class.

Tidey Wed 16-Sep-09 20:27:29

Nah, it was fine really, we found a name we liked even more and then didn't tell anyone what we'd chosen in case it ended up the name of a ferret or something!

tryingtobemarypoppins Wed 16-Sep-09 20:32:18

LOL Tidey!
Any suggestions Georgimama?

Crapweasel Wed 16-Sep-09 20:37:32

I know it's unhelpful to say this but...this is partly why you shouldn't disucss baby names with anyone (apart from DPs/DHs obv) pre birth.

I have to know, did you friend share her list? Was Evie on it?

It is a lovely name but, yes, getting v. popular. Can you live with your other two "top threes"?

Crapweasel Wed 16-Sep-09 20:38:33

Not "live" - "love".

I didn't make a typo but re-read and realised that you need to do more than live with a name....

Georgimama Wed 16-Sep-09 20:43:08

Anything that isn't Evie?

Do you have any other children whose names it needs to "go" with? What are your other two choices? What about surname - obviously you don't want to be specific but what letter does it start with?

What about (just some random names I quite like at the mo if I were to happen to find myself expecting a girl):

Beatrice
Helen
Juno
Lucy
Claudia
Octavia
Fleur
Isabella (it's on the wane after being v popular about five years ago)
Julia
Hermione
Agatha
Catherine

tryingtobemarypoppins Wed 16-Sep-09 20:43:47

Crapweasel that is WHY I told her though......so it didn't happen......have I missed the point?????

Lily Williams = a bit of a mouth fall!
Poppy Williams = loads of poppy and not sure about being 30 years old and called Poppy!
Honey = DH loves, I am not sure at all
Matilda/Tilly = hummmmmmm

tryingtobemarypoppins Wed 16-Sep-09 20:46:34

Thanks Georgimama , Fleur is ok.....growing on me..... not sure about the others! But thank-you

Oh and Crapweasel, no she never said any names.....

Crapweasel Wed 16-Sep-09 20:49:08

I do see what you mean Mary Poppins. Just wondering if your friend was secretly thinking "damn, Evie's on our list too, hope I pop first" or "hmm, Evie, hadn't thought of that...".

From your list (FWIW) I really like Matilda/Tilly and also Lily (and don't think the L thing is too much).

Honey is not one I'd go for (think there was a previous thread on this name also).

I know a Poppy so have to like but do see your point also.

Georgimama Wed 16-Sep-09 20:50:22

From your list I would go with Matilda.

Crapweasel Wed 16-Sep-09 20:51:23

X-posted.

Fleur is nice. Also like Flora/Florence.

IMO names that are similar to Evie include Maisie, Daisy, Isabel...

I also know an Esme?
