I know Jo for short is quite popular. But I do not know of any Joanne's under the age of about 20!

I prefer Johanna (or Joanna) -bit less abrupt.

mathanxiety Thu 10-Sep-09 15:19:16

How about Giovanna? I also like the Johanna version.

MrsBadger Thu 10-Sep-09 15:55:29

I prefer Joanna too

the only Johannas I know are German and hence pronounced yo-hanna

Joanne sounds a bit "council estate" to me, at the rsk of sounding snobby.
Joanna is nice. And Jo or Joey are nice nn

Joanna is my dd and I hated it[as did she]when people said 'Joanne' by mistake-what a difference an 'a' makes!!

MrsMc82 Fri 11-Sep-09 17:11:58

I'm called joanne and despite not coming from a council estate i still hate being called by my full name and am ALWAYS called jo by EVERYONE.... as one of you said it just sounds so abrupt (oh and anyone who tries to call me joanna would get swiftly corrected too!) x

random Fri 11-Sep-09 17:14:49

Oh my oh my ...'sounds a bit council estate'hmm

akamummy Fri 11-Sep-09 18:12:21

There's nothing wrong with it... there are just 237,000,000 nicer and more interesting names in the world.

FritesMenthe Fri 11-Sep-09 18:49:42

I like Joanna (like Julie/Julia - the 'a' makes all the difference).

mumzy Fri 11-Sep-09 18:51:09

Yuk is my honest, instant reaction to it.

simplesusan Fri 11-Sep-09 19:07:46

I know lots of older Joannes and a few Johannas and I always thought it would be nice to be a "Jo". Don't know many young ones though.

dogonpoints Fri 11-Sep-09 19:17:34

I don't like joanne/joanna at all

onlyanauntie Fri 11-Sep-09 19:38:57

Cripes. I am Nicola, my best friend is Joanne, and I'm thinking of Bethany for my first baby in March....I must be true scum shock

I do live in a bit of a rough area oop north but do consider myself quite posh! Until now!

Nancy10 Sat 12-Sep-09 20:37:59

Thanks for your replies! I think Josephine is lovely. Just thought Joanne and Joanna are names not really used now!

Joeymac Wed 16-Sep-09 21:02:54

I'm called Joanne and I HATE it. I've always felt it was really chavvy (sorry I know it's not PC but hey it's my name so I can slag it off)and I so wish I had been called Josephine. From about the age of three I've been calling myself Joey and at work I'm Jo. Love Joey and Jo but from Josephine NOT Joanne.

crokky Wed 16-Sep-09 21:12:20

PMSL at onlyanauntie saying she must be true scum.

I love Joanne, think it is a really nice name that isn't used that much these days. I think Joanna is nicer, but either fine really.
