My Mum is a Janet. It does have quite a harsh sound to it.
My Mum warned us all to NEVER name any of our children after her, even for a middle name as she has always hated it HTH

I am a Janet but "changed" my name when I went to Uni to Jan, as I felt that "Janet" was too "Doctor Finlay's casebook"

Although I wasn't born Scottish (born in South Africa), by chance we ended up moving to Scotland when I was 3, so as far as I am concerned I am Scottish.

PS< Juliet is gorgeous. Pick that instead of dowdy Janet.

How about the more glamourous version, Jeanette?

My dd is Olivia Janet (never use her middle names though!). Quite like the name but couldn't quite bring myself to use it as a first name. [She is named after my Granny Janet]

I'm a Janet and wouldn't particularly wish it on anyone. Dowdy, middle-England and plain dull. Many nicer names beginning with J that pps have mentioned. Would use it as a middle name if it was in the family (ie would be pleased if my dcs used it as a middle name for their dds in years to come!).

My Granny was Janet and always called Netta, which I quite like. On another note i have a few friends who refer to their fanjos as their janets. Not sure if that will have helped on balance!

not one I would use, my niece has a middle name of joan, after a grandmother which is another old name, and does sound odd with her modern ist name, if you have family reasons for wanting to use it then add it as a middle name. I don't think she would be teased but it is old fashoned and not a name that has kept popularity.

Think you've all confirmed what I thought, it's after my grandmother, although I'm tempted to ask her to chose a name as her's isn't that great, would that be a bit insulting?!

Showofhands, get lost!
