Bit silly

preggersplayspop Mon 31-Aug-09 14:42:53

Its a weed?

MrsMerryHenry Mon 31-Aug-09 14:45:11

grin I prefer Thistle.

marinaq Mon 31-Aug-09 14:47:01

I wasn't joking sad Dh and I both liked this one.
Can I really only expect this type of reaction?

SoWhat Mon 31-Aug-09 14:48:36

Yes you can, sorry.

xxxxBAMBOOxxxx Mon 31-Aug-09 14:49:52

awful. poor child

MrsMerryHenry Mon 31-Aug-09 14:50:40

Marinaq: YES. Don't do it.

ninedragons Mon 31-Aug-09 14:51:02

really, truly, diabolically awful.

FlightHattendant Mon 31-Aug-09 14:54:06

I like it a lot before I thought of the inevitable stinging aspect sad

It's a veyr pretty name. There are sorts of nettle that don't sting and you can also make nice not all bad!

Look into the deeper origins of it etymologically if you want a quick comeback - not sure what you'll find but could be helpful!
Otherwise as suggested Lettice is beautiful, think it means happiness.

MmeLindt Mon 31-Aug-09 14:54:18

I thought it was a joke. Sorry.

FlightHattendant Mon 31-Aug-09 14:54:33

Or use it as a nickname for something like Janette, iyswim

Tidey Mon 31-Aug-09 14:56:17

Nettie you might be able to get away with. To nettle means to irritate though, I think it might be one nature name too far. I know of a little girl called Sage, bit different but rather sweet.

belgo Mon 31-Aug-09 14:56:35

there are so many pretty plant names for girls, please don't choose Nettle.

morningpaper Mon 31-Aug-09 14:57:22

No no no no no

FlightHattendant Mon 31-Aug-09 14:57:35

Also the hedge nettle doesn't sting, known as Stachys

Pielight Mon 31-Aug-09 14:58:37

Yes, you could get away with Nettie, but it's not all that.

All better variations?

beanieb Mon 31-Aug-09 14:59:17

I like it and as far as the 'poor child' comments go I think it's ridiculous to think something like this will cause any lasting damage to a child. You go for it if you like it. What's wrong with being unusual. it's hardly child abuse and why should you change your mind about something you like just because there are idiots in the worrld who might resort to bullying someone for their name!

nettle isn't a bad name, it's a lovely name.

FlightHattendant Mon 31-Aug-09 14:59:48

I suspect origins are from 'net' ie something knotted, in the sense that the roots are rather knotted and form a net. Possibly. They are a bugger to dig up grin

belgo Mon 31-Aug-09 15:00:44

Lettice and Lovage are far worse imo.
