Baby names

The only name we like for DC2 rhymes with DC1's name!

Would that be too naff? I have a terrible feeling it would...

But I do love it! Would also consider giving it as a first name but using middle name as a nickname so the connection wasn't made all the time. (But middle name doesn't really 'flow' with surname, so don't suggest we go with that instead!)

This is all for as-yet unconceived DD

I wouldn't.

I know brothers who are Samuel and Daniel and tbh it sounds rather silly, even though they try to use Sam and Daniel as much as possible. I just think rhyming names will always produce a bit of a snigger.

What are the names?

Report
Fimbo · 26/08/2009 11:26

Depends on the names - spill

Oh god, my choices are WAY more snigger-worthy than Sam and Dan!

My name for DD would be Martha Maude, nickname Maudie.

No prizes for guessing what my DS is called!

Billy and Milly?

Joe and Flo?

Sam and Pam?

Harry and Carrie?

Arthur and Martha..... er nope!

Well, only if you want your children to sound like comic strip characters or something off CBeebies

No sorry I wouldn't though I love the name Martha.
If you're going to call your (imaginary!) child Maudie anyway why don't you just give her that as her name?

Report
jamandjerusalem · 26/08/2009 11:34

Because Maudie sort of rhymes with our surname!

Oh, I am getting in a pickle...

Nope wouldn't do it.

You'll likely have changed your mind a million and one times by the time you actually are pg so wouldn't be faffing about it now tbf.

That's true, I used to read baby name books when I was a teenager and highlight the ones I loved. Didn't have DS until I was 30, and Arthur was definitely never highlighted! Not entirely sure where it came from, in fact. Always thought he was a girl when I was pregnant, and we'd sort of decided on Martha for him... hence maybe my issue now.

I call my DS Samuel Daniel Emmanuel Nathaniel Spaniel deliberately to be silly! So maybe rhyming names would be a bit too silly. Although I LOVE Martha!

I don't see why not, especially if you call her Maudie. Martha Maude is lovely.

What about Tessa/Tess
Nancy
Alice
Eliza

jamandjerusalem · 26/08/2009 13:22

Ooh, thanks belgo, maybe it is feasible after all.

Not so keen on those alternatives for myriad reasons. I do have a bumper shortlist though, so if we a. have another child, b. it's a girl, and c. isn't a Martha then there are a few to fall back on. I do like Tess though, but there's a Tess at DH's work which will sadly rule it out for him!

And if you are being pedantic, Martha does not rhyme with Arthur.

Report
belgo · 26/08/2009 13:38

Just go with the names you love, you'll only regret it otherwise, and it's not like they are way out ridiculous names.

Eh? In what language does Martha not rhyme with Arthur?

(Please don't call them that OP, reminds me of asking whether someone is a tranny "Is she Martha or Arthur?")

I guess it doesn't rhyme very well with a Scottish accent (I am one btw!).

Nooooo

No you can't have Arthur and Martha (which was my immediate thought on reading thread title, funnily enough).

I happen to know one of each at DS1's school and once joked that they should get married

Ah ha! Cheers Fimbo! Couldn't wrap my mummybrain around that one!
