What do you think of Ethel as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

Lulubee Sun 23-Aug-09 19:41:11

You're joking right? Please tell me you're joking...

Tidey Sun 23-Aug-09 19:41:39

Bloody awful. Some old lady names should not be resurrected.

trysty Sun 23-Aug-09 19:42:41

No I'm not joking. Is it that bad?

ShowOfHands Sun 23-Aug-09 19:42:54

It's an absolutely lovely name.

ShowOfHands Sun 23-Aug-09 19:43:23

Look I like it. And I have wonderful taste. Ignore them others.

trysty Sun 23-Aug-09 19:43:43

It's not that much different from Edith or Elsie or Hilda.

Tidey Sun 23-Aug-09 19:45:26

And I would repeat my above statement re: Hilda.

differentID Sun 23-Aug-09 19:45:40

Ethel should have sisters Gertrude and Doris and brothers called Alfred, Leonard and Walter. It's not my cup of tea.

trysty Sun 23-Aug-09 19:47:42

Tidey those are back in fashion now aren't they?
Thanks showofhands

My Gran is called Ethel, she is really lovely, I like it for that reason alone, though it may have a certain nineteen twenties cool, arts and crafts stylishness, that is when my Gran was born.

trysty Sun 23-Aug-09 19:54:17

My thinking is that if I use this in a few months. It may casue a few raised eyebrows with some, but it will be normal and ahead of the fashion when she is growing up.
It has a pretty sound, no? I think it is stylish too as pp says.

muggglewump Sun 23-Aug-09 19:56:00

I think you are joking, and if you aren't, then you are mad!

It's awful.

Old lady chic taken too far.

piscesmoon Sun 23-Aug-09 20:01:50

It is just about the worst name possible!

BoysAreLikeDogs Sun 23-Aug-09 20:03:13

I prefer Edith smile

screamingabdab Sun 23-Aug-09 20:05:16

I think it is probably too fashion-forward (and I like old lady names)

cyanarasamba Sun 23-Aug-09 20:06:40

How about Eunice? (My lovely nan's name!)

Not keen on Ethel, sorry.

nigglewiggle Sun 23-Aug-09 20:07:19

I think it is still very "old-lady" and I have an Edith, so I'm not anti old-lady resurrections. I think this name is not helped by Ethel in Eastenders with her "little willy"!

screamingabdab Sun 23-Aug-09 20:08:47

I was thinking about Faith today ........

mathanxiety Sun 23-Aug-09 20:48:46

Oh no please no. It's as bad as Gertie.

tummytickler Sun 23-Aug-09 21:35:04

I love Ethel. It is on our list (along with Enid, Aphra and Hilda)

Slickbird Sun 23-Aug-09 21:37:46

Nothing. If you're a granny.

Stella, on the other hand can work remarkably well. I knew one, and once she got to her feet, she was not to be messed with! grin

I'm really trying to imagine a baby called Ethil. And then a little girl. And then a teenager. And I'm sorry, I just can't.

Slickbird Sun 23-Aug-09 21:38:12

Sorry, Ethel.

Am exhausted.

MrsMattie Sun 23-Aug-09 21:40:22

Hideous.

blithedance Sun 23-Aug-09 21:40:38

It was good enough for my grandma.

I like it, like a sort of feminine of so-popular Ethan.
