How's this for a first name, 2 middle names combo?

Sylvie Alexandra Violet? Does it just sound like a list of random names?! Too long?

DD has 2 middle names so dc2 needs to have the same to avoid arguments. Trouble is, it's blooming hard finding names which all fit together and go with our surname, and also mean something to both dh and myself.

I also like

Josephine Violet but can't think of another middle name which might go. I suppose Alexandra might, seeing as I like that name anyway...

Trying to avoid the obvious 'May/Grace/Rose/Anne' type middle names. DD has Catherine and Elizabeth already. Any suggestions welcome!

I have no idea whether this baby will be a boy or a girl yet, but i'm trying to sort out a girls' name first, then when i'm more or less settled i'll start thinking about possible boys names combinations (which is even harder!)

I love Sylvie and I love Violet. I'd put something else in the middle.

The ee at the end of Sylvie runs into that vowel sound at the start of Alexandra. Alexandra is also quite a strong name, it's all a bit of a mouthful. I'd put something gentler in the middle.

TBH, Sylvie Alexandra Violet sounds like a very fancy name, IYSWIM! If DD1 has Catherine and Elizabeth as two of her three, they are two beautiful but very classic names - maybe your DD2 would appreciate something in a similar vein. (I speak from experience - my niece has two very unusual names and has already come home aware that her names are absolutely unique in her peer group and asking to change her name at the age of 5 )

What about something like Sophie or Charlotte?

The other oner is alright though, ALex or Alexis is nicer and not grannyish!

MadameCastafiore - i appreciate your honesty but names do go in cycles these days. 10 years ago a baby Wilfred or Dolly would have been unthinkable and now there are 1000s... Vi was also my grandma's name so i'd like to honour her now she's gone...

Soupdragon - you have a point about Alexandra at the end. it does have a ring to it...

Maggie - i get what you mean about toning it down but Jane is our (lovely) landlady's name! I do like Nina though...

Slayerette - i do like Sophie... Maybe with Josephine as the first name?

msrisotto - picture the back of the car on a long journey when they've finished arguing about sweets 'why does she get 2 middle names?' or 'Why have i got 2 sucky middle names and she's only got one nice one? they sound rubbish'

I appreciate that names go in cycles, my DD is Harriet and that would have been frowned upon 15 years ago but I see the shortened version - Harry or Hettie - to be pretty but Silv or Vi - can you imagine that being shouted out in the school playground.

My grandmother was Marjorie but I wouldn't lumber a kid with the nickname Marj for all the tea in china!

My mil is called Violet, she hates it, even more so when someone calls her Vi. I think it is ok for a middle name though.

I think Sylvie Violet Alexandra is nicer.

I can see what you mean about vi and Silv but not everyone has to shorten their name.

Not keen on Violet myself. It makes me think of that horrible character in Just William and it sounds like violent.

2 syllables, quite a standard english surname, although don't want to write it here for anonymity reasons, what with the daily mail fiasco !

Re arguments: my 2 DBs have 2 forenames, my sister and I have three. In the eyes of children this is clearly "because you love the girls more"!

I really like your combos; Sylvie Alexandra Violet is great -- I don't think the names clash and the cadence or rhythm is good. The two V sounds with the XZ sound of Alexandra in the middle is v nice imo. Josephine Alexandra Violet is v nice also. Again nice cadence and soft consonant sounds. I rather like Violet at the end because it ends with the consonant T sound, a good solid stop. Sylvie and Josephine are both French names, which I adore, personally. They're both feminine, and will be nice as your DD gets older too. Of course you're only going to address your DD as Sylvie or Josephine, right? Not the full whack every time you call her? I think you should go with three names if first DD has three. DCs can get mad jealous over the strangest things, especially sisters.

I love al 3 of your names I desperately wanted Sylvie for DD3 but DH said no and DD2 is Alexandra and Violet is lovely

would you consider turning them round? Sylvie Violet Alexandra has a slightly better flow depending on the surname but I think 2 syllables makes it all ok

all of mine had two middle names each - they're there for a reason
