What do you think of Osian as a boy's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

Quite cool actually... doesn't have any particular connotations for me anyway. Could be a bit try-hard...?

BitOfFun Fri 14-Aug-09 18:45:08

Puts me in mind of Osama actually, sorry...

ohnelly Fri 14-Aug-09 18:45:51

Its Welsh by the way!

A very close relative of mine is called Oisin - it's Irish. Getting more popular.

thehouseofmirth Fri 14-Aug-09 18:54:56

Love it! It's DS1's middle name and I wish we'd been brave enough to use it as his first name as we'd originally intended.

Is this the Welsh version of the Irish Oisin.

I suppose it's what you're used to, but it sounds a bit weird to me. Makes me understand how Oisin might seem to somebody who wasn't familiar with it.

Firawla Fri 14-Aug-09 18:58:56

Not come across it before (only Oisin) but it seems nice

Ondine Fri 14-Aug-09 19:34:10

I prefer Oisin, which I love. But if you're Welsh then I would understand using Osian which is also nice.

I like it. I know an Oisin. It's definitely a name you have to hear if you;re not familiar with it ... the first times you see it written it's like "eh?? what?"

bronzethinksthedmarearses Sat 15-Aug-09 10:44:46

Its from Welsh mythology My daughters named after Osians love.

thatsnotmybelly Sat 15-Aug-09 10:47:02

How do you pronounce it?

And how do you pronounce Oisin?

LetThemEatCake Sat 15-Aug-09 11:23:54

Like Osh-in

thatsnotmybelly Sat 15-Aug-09 11:28:34

Are they both pronounced the same?

bellissima Sat 15-Aug-09 12:03:08

Oisin sounds nice. Osian sounds like part of the Caucasus/Georgia etc that is always being fought over.

Ondine Sat 15-Aug-09 12:07:00

These are good sites for hearing how Irish and Welsh names are pronounced; Oisín and Osian.

KnickKnack Sat 15-Aug-09 12:12:12

The irish Oisin is pronounced osh-een (I'm irish and know a few Oisins)

pinkthechaffinch Sat 15-Aug-09 13:05:35

reminds me of bones 'os' meaning bone in French

Flamesparrow Sat 15-Aug-09 13:12:01

I like Osian.

DH vetoed.

limonchik Sat 15-Aug-09 13:13:27

I think Oisin is "osh een" (or ush een) and Osian is more like "osh an".

ohnelly Sat 15-Aug-09 18:59:04

yes Osian is pronounced osh an in Wales. Thanks for your input everyone

mathanxiety Sat 15-Aug-09 19:42:22

It's a bit too like Ocean, imo.

DreamsInBinary Sat 15-Aug-09 20:38:06

Love Osian - was on short-list but dc2 was a girl smile

Def Osh-an

TiggyR Sat 15-Aug-09 21:05:47

I like Oisin as in Osh-een, with a soft O, but if Osian is pron. Oh - shian, then it's a bit too much like Ocean, which is a made-up downmarket 'C' word name - sorry. (though it's better for a boy than a girl, esp. if you can argue that it's a proper Welsh name)

DreamsInBinary Sat 15-Aug-09 21:48:58

Ah, now I get the Ocean thing. It's not pronounced Oh-shan, as it's a short 'O', like in otter.
