Now I have heard some names over the last few years that strike me as odd. But MN frequently tells me otherwise (Velvet being a case in point a few months ago hmm). DH tells me not to be narrow-minded [sigh]. But DD came back from swimming the other day and told me she had met a girl called Suede. I asked her to repeat it and no I hadn't misheard it.

Am I just hopelessly old-fashioned or is Suede exceptionally strange name for a child?

OrmIrian Wed 12-Aug-09 16:37:29

BTW I am assuming that was the spelling.

MaggieBelleVirgo Wed 12-Aug-09 16:37:46

oooh it's a bit rude. lIke Velvet, but older, more worn out velvet.

HumphreyCobbler Wed 12-Aug-09 16:37:50

very strange

I think velvet is rather odd too

FlightHattendant Wed 12-Aug-09 16:38:32

Oh dear.

we met a boy called Gage the other day.

I made him spell it grin

MaggieBelleVirgo Wed 12-Aug-09 16:38:54

ps, I think velvet is a ludicrous name for a baby too. journo suzy godson (??) called her poor child this. slang for labia isn't it.

odd choice

Perhaps Turnip would be better......

OrmIrian Wed 12-Aug-09 16:40:53

Is it really margo shock Ah well no worse than Willy for a boy I suppose.

OrmIrian Wed 12-Aug-09 16:41:33

Sorry maggie not margo <slaps own wrist>

FlightHattendant - a (rather strange) friend of ours called his son Gage - they've moved away since, and I'm not sure where they're living now, but maybe it's the same one - can't be that many, can there. I can't remember when he was born though, so can't work out how old he'd be now.

TheGashlycrumbTinies Wed 12-Aug-09 16:51:19

Velvet is the name of the the girl in National Velvet, I don't think it's dreadful, but Suede hmm.

FlightHattendant Wed 12-Aug-09 16:52:11

Oh...he was around 9 I think. He was a sweet boy smile complex family situation from what I could gather.

CarmenSanDiego Wed 12-Aug-09 16:52:33

I quite like Suede Less girly than Velvet, I think.

Gage is popular in the US

TheGashlycrumbTinies Wed 12-Aug-09 16:52:39

It really slang for labia? shockshockshock

pinkmagic1 Wed 12-Aug-09 16:54:16

Came across a boy called 'Diesel' recently. Wondering if he has a brother called 'Petrol'!

squeaver Wed 12-Aug-09 16:56:27

Is it "Swed" or "Swayed"?

JemL Wed 12-Aug-09 17:00:22

Wasn't Gage the name of the little boy in the film Pet Cemetary?! It always reminds me of the animatronic little boy stabbing someone (haven't seen it for years!)

Jujubean77 Wed 12-Aug-09 17:01:36

Velvet sounds like a prostitute

bleh Wed 12-Aug-09 17:02:08

I thought it was only slang in the Victorian era, hence the TV show "Tipping the Velvet" which was Victorian slang for Lesbianism?

MaggieBelleVirgo Wed 12-Aug-09 17:17:35

Oh right, well, I've read the book and seen the programme, so for me now, that's what it means. I can't de-programme that expression out of my head!

pointydog Wed 12-Aug-09 17:31:33

Your dd must have got it wrong, orm.

Dd2 (when she was 4) told us about a new girl at her nursery called Flipper.

Turned out she was called Philippa.

Flipper! grin
I remember being in hysterics in primary school when we learnt the word "Vagina". My best friends aunt was called Regina and we all misheard and thought she was named after her mum's lady-bits!!! blush

MaggieBelleVirgo Wed 12-Aug-09 18:22:46

Denim and Suede! omg, sounds like cheap scent by Lentheric, aimed at teenagers.
