I can live with it being pretentiou but is it a bit too Jilly Cooper?

Love those books - fab names - Octavia, Lysander etc

suwoo Wed 15-Jul-09 21:21:53

Do you pronounce it per-ditta or per-deeta?

ilovetochat Wed 15-Jul-09 21:22:53

wasnt it a dog in 101 dalmations, with pongo? thats what it makes me think of sorry blush

clemette Wed 15-Jul-09 21:25:22

sad that Perdita, Octavia and Lysander make you think of Jilly Cooper and not Shakespeare...

ArcticLemming Wed 15-Jul-09 21:25:22

Nice name, but I don't like the fact it means "lost"

Momdeguerre Wed 15-Jul-09 21:25:35

Yup, think it was a dog in the film! Can think of far worse links for a name!

Love the abbreviation Perdie and Dita - pronnounced per-dee-ta.

LadyOfWaffle Wed 15-Jul-09 21:26:16

I love it! I love all Jilly Cooper names though....

Momdeguerre Wed 15-Jul-09 21:26:52

Don't mind a bit of Shakespeare but they were not half as good to read on holiday!

slackrunner Wed 15-Jul-09 21:27:51

I think it's a really pretty name, but I don't like the meaning (it means 'lost' or 'The Lost One'). Depends on how much emphasis you place on name meanings I guess.

PotterVsCullen Wed 15-Jul-09 21:29:05

Perdie - A cats name
Dita - Burlesque act
Perdita - lovely in Shakespeare, but not so in the Jilly Cooper way.

MaggieBeBold Wed 15-Jul-09 21:29:55

I think she would be born wearing pearl earrings, and those navy gucci snaffle loafers that haven't been made for 15 yrs

MrsBadger Wed 15-Jul-09 21:30:02

Dita is a good nn too

Momdeguerre Wed 15-Jul-09 21:37:02

Meant to be a bit of a nod to DH's french family whose surname is lost in French and sounds similar so I don't mind the meaning.

Maggie - you have just described what I am wearing! grin!

MamaLazarou Thu 16-Jul-09 08:27:50

It makes me think of the dalmation mum in 101 Dalmations.

Also, Dita (von Teese): the fake-titted skank.

skihorse Thu 16-Jul-09 09:36:54

Love it.

mamaLazarou Hallelujah! Someone else sees her for what she is! There's nothing big or clever about wearing your scants in public!

Makes me think of that column in Sunday Times Style magazine....can't remember the name of it, have nappy head..

boodleboot Thu 16-Jul-09 13:54:18

I like Perdita. Perdie is a lovely nickname and makes me think of kittens purring....

BIG thumbs up

LilRedWG Thu 16-Jul-09 13:57:30

Reminds me of Agnes Nitt from the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett. Hates her name so starts calling herself Perdita X and wearing black nail varnish.

LadyPinkofPinkerton Thu 16-Jul-09 14:01:26

Friend of mine has a sister called Perdita.

Also love the other names

Bleatblurt Thu 16-Jul-09 14:03:16

Was just about to post what LilRedWG said. grin

A friend of a friend has just called her baby perdita. They are not short of a bob or 2!

sockmonster Fri 17-Jul-09 20:35:28

It means lost, I cannot get over that association. It's not a good meaning for a child's name!

Sounds like someone trying to sound clever and unique and coming across as a pretentious brit who has no clue what they have called their own child.
