Baby names

I thought we had decided :(

I thought we were settled on Felix Arthur (section in 16 days) but sent a text today to DH suggesting Felix Oscar.

He now prefers Oscar Felix and says he likes Oscar a lot more than Felix.

I know we can wait until we see what he looks like but what does the MN jury think?

Felix Oscar
Oscar Felix

Disclaimer: I've had enough references to the cat food to last me a lifetime .

I think they're both nice and think you should wait and see if he looks like a Felix or Oscar

don't let it worry you at this late stage

Felix Oscar

(to me, Oscar is a dogs name more than Felix is a cats name)

ha ha
more fool you for suggesting something else!

i like the first one not the other two

I think keep an open mind and see what the baby looks like when he arrives

Agree that you should say you will bear both in mind and see what he looks like when born.
If you prefer Felix Oscar (I do too) then he WILL look like a Felix Oscar

Wait and see what he looks like. You might change your minds again and call him something totally different.

When it's a close run thing though, I'm afraid I do think the mum has the final say - perk of the job for giving birth!

Hmm. I'd keep Arthur, as Felix Oscar and Oscar Felix make me think of police call signs (and I know they would be Foxtrot Oscar, but that's what came into my mind).

Also, round here Oscar is the default boy's name, like John or Peter in the 70s.

I said that Norbert, that Oscar is a dogs name.

There won't be any other names in the frame- all discounted.

He did just say 'its up to you' but thats not very democratic is it .

If its up to you then stick with Felix Arthur, by far the nicest and STOP suggesting different ones you nutter

Fine names separately but I think Felix and Oscar were the names of The Odd Couple...

We are having a very similar debate in our house and it's driving me potty too (Felix or Oscar for ds first name). We've got five more weeks of these conversations to endure look forward to.

I personally wouldn't put the two names together (although I really like them both) due to the rather irritating odd couple reference. For this reason I would go for your chosen first name followed by something a bit more traditional, like Arthur as originally planned.

It does sound like you had your heart set on Felix Arthur - so I say stick to your guns and go for that.

Oscar Felix is nicer IMO.

The Odd Couple was a TV show (on years ago)about two old grumpy men called Felix and Oscar. I had never heard of it either until my parents-in-law pointed it out when we told them our name shortlist.

Baisey · 14/07/2009 21:03

Oscar and Felix are both nice names but im not sure if both of them together are a bit much. Id stick with your first choice of Arthur.

Report
sophiesmummie · 14/07/2009 21:04

Actually, the Odd Couple association is why dh vetoed either Felix or Oscar!

I prefer Arthur from all three - lovely, classic and not that common.

suwoo · 14/07/2009 21:06

Magbags, I can't believe you are also stuck on Felix or Oscar.

I also like Milo, Monty, Caspar, Jasper and Cassius, all of which have been discounted for various reasons.

DH seems to think Oscar is unusual, but reading MN tells me otherwise, non?

Oscar is definetely more popular than Felix and is gaining in popularity faster too over the past few years (according to the statistics). I don't know anyone called Felix or Oscar though.

There is also apparently a baby in Eastenders called Oscar (I would rather stick needles in my eyes than watch it - but I have been reliably informed!) which may influence popularity.

The other name on our list is Louis (pronounced Loo-ee). But the pronunciation issues put me off it slightly. Dh reeeallly wants Felix, his favourite by far.

The Odd Couple was also a film with Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau and is a bit of a classic, so it's not just a dusty old never-repeated TV show, it's something that's likely to crop up in the schedules for years to come...Maybe not a dealbreaker but something people will know about.

oscar v popular

Report
suwoo · 14/07/2009 21:44

We didn't know Oscar was a baby in Eastenders, that does put a different slant on it.

I only knew of Oscar being popular from here, we know of no Felix's or Oscar's in RL.
