Alison?

I thought I had the name thing sussed (which with 14 weeks to go is pretty good) but lately find myself really liking "Alison". I know it's kind of 70s -there were heaps of them at school and I am in my 30s - but somehow I imagine my Alison to be sparky and outgoing. How do others see it?

Ha ha - my 8 year old like this name - you might be 20 years ahead of your time for this one to be cool again! DD and all her mates will be using it in 20 years!

Prefer Alice tbh. Its ok though.

ninedragons Sun 12-Jul-09 12:53:42

I like it. Possibly because of very positive associations: every Alison I know is brainy.

MaryAnnSingleton Sun 12-Jul-09 12:53:43

I just thought of Elvis Costello ! nice name - ,my 60 yr old cousin is called that...I like Allie and Alice

MrsHappy Sun 12-Jul-09 12:58:18

Oooh yes - Elvis Costello. grin
I think of Alison as quite edgy which I think is why I like it so much, whereas Alice I just don't like at all (it's too soft).

MaryAnnSingleton Sun 12-Jul-09 14:41:08

My cousin Alison is a very dynamic person btw !

I'm an Alison. I'll leave you to make of that what you will ... !

squeaver Sun 12-Jul-09 14:45:34

She'd be the only one in her class, that's for sure.

Ali/Allie is very cool.

I think that it is a name that will become very trendy again in the future. Like daisy/molly/rose/lily enjoying revivals at the moment.

Ali is just a cool name!

WannaBeAKitchenGardener Sun 12-Jul-09 14:58:08

it's lovely and a very refreshing change from all the Graces and Olivias and Charlottes and Lucys

jellybeans Sun 12-Jul-09 15:29:23

I don't like it much, not keen on the ...son names, I hate Ali also.

HollyBunda Sun 12-Jul-09 15:30:18

I love it.

boodleboot Sun 12-Jul-09 15:57:39

i dunno if i think it is boring or not. I think Alyson looks slightly more interesting...NN Lissy or Ally.

I love Alison (but I love lots of 70s names!). I would spell it the traditional way (spelling names with a y instead of an i dates them more imo - that is very 70s!) and shorten it to Ali when she is little if Alison seems too grown-up...

JemL Sun 12-Jul-09 16:41:52

I really like it - reminds me of a lemonheads song - "Alison's Starting to Happen" - it's lovely and very different, compared to all the current popular names.

hocuspontas Sun 12-Jul-09 16:59:37

I like it and don't spell it any other way like Alysson or Allisonne. I know an Allison and even that looks wrong to me

MrsHappy Sun 12-Jul-09 19:22:51

Thanks all - I am surprised how many people like it (because it is quite 70s and those names are not exactly trendy right now...), but then I am surprised how much I like it too! Although I am slightly disturbed by Mrswoolf's irrational hatred... grin

Squeaver - that's exactly what I say whenever someone tells me they have named their baby something hideous!

Jem - I used to love Evan Dando smile

Hocuspontas - I agree with you re spelling. There will be no random ys or extra letters whatever we go with, I promise!

CrushWithEyeliner Sun 12-Jul-09 19:27:49

Like it a lot

BecauseImWorthIt Sun 12-Jul-09 20:30:38

Thanks, mrswoolf - did you read that I had posted it is my name? hmm

Pyrocanthus Sun 12-Jul-09 21:18:37

I think the 70s names are ripe for a comeback; we must have used up all the old lady names by now, surely. I quite like Alison, but don't mess with the spelling.

Susan
Karen
Julie

Pretty names, which became so overused people stopped appreciating them.

<dodges to avoid incoming brickbats>

Ronaldinhio Sun 12-Jul-09 21:21:35

all the Alison's I know are fat

MrsHappy Sun 12-Jul-09 21:26:27

I reckon you're right Pyrocanthus - I met a new baby called Lisa the other day. You don't get many of those these days...

BecauseImWorthIt Sun 12-Jul-09 21:30:58

fuck off Ronald!

Ronaldinhio Sun 12-Jul-09 21:32:18

grin grin grin grin
