we did like myles but not so sure anymore so have the following names we like, please be nice!
Elwood-Eli/woody as nn
Elias-again Eli as nn
Myles-though not sure anymore as dd leaked the name and everyone keeps calling baby by this name now which is irritating as he's not here yet!
Francis-i like but dp thinks given baby will have a very irish surname is too irish sounding, which sounds stupid given his suggestion below...
Shamus- as either middle name or fist name. we want 'james' in there after my brother but thought shamus would be nice instead as dp is half irish so a bit of both! also my sister has just used it for her baby!
any other suggestions or combinations welcome!
so yay or nay??

Seamus is nice, shamus looks a bit strange...

I quite like Elias. Don't like the other 3 (is that nice?)

Lilyloo Mon 29-Jun-09 11:11:33

Like Myles and Elias

CurryMaid Mon 29-Jun-09 11:12:34

Seamus is Irish for James so can't see that that would work. I don't think Shamus is a legitimate spelling of the name either (although happy to be corrected!)

Of your list I prefer Elwood but doesn't that have Blues Brother's connotations?

lydiathetattooedlady Mon 29-Jun-09 11:12:52

i prefer the look of seamus, but spelt that way it means jacob, spelling it shamus means james. i know we're awkward!

love Elias and Francis.
I like Myles
Seamus is ok, woudln't spell it Shamus though.
Elwood- still deciding on that one! lol

ShowOfHands Mon 29-Jun-09 11:13:45

Do you like odd made-up spellings?

Seamus is a lovely name. Shamus is not a name at all, is slang for a private detective isn't it?

Myles is a surname (although I think there's something in Greek mythology too). Miles is better.

Elwood is a surname again.

Elias is okay.

Francis is a good, strong name. smile

lydiathetattooedlady Mon 29-Jun-09 11:13:49

yes dp picked the name because of blues brothers! we wouldn't use both either shamus or james!

Shamus looks odd, prefer the spelling Seamus, but not sure on the actual name.

The only one I really like is Francis, but that is because I met a little boy called Franklin the other day and he was adorable.

lydiathetattooedlady Mon 29-Jun-09 11:15:14

eeek in our baby name book it is spelt shamus for james seamus for jacob...maybe the books wrong it is old! i've just been getting the spellings out of the book!
its the sound i like not the way they're written!

Astrophe Mon 29-Jun-09 11:17:33

you know James and Jacob mean the same thing though? ("he grasps the heel" - from the story of Jacob and Esau in the Bible, which figuratively means "he decieves", apparently).

I prefer Seamus too.

Elias would be my fave out of your choices.

SoupDragon Mon 29-Jun-09 11:17:45

Seamus is the Irish form of James, not Jacob. "Shamus" is dreadful.

the only name I like from your list is Elias

CurryMaid Mon 29-Jun-09 11:18:58

says here Seamus is James but also has the Shamus variant, SoH you're right about the private detective!

CurryMaid Mon 29-Jun-09 11:19:53

What about Jacob as a name? Jacob James?

I think "Jacob James" would be like "Christopher Kristof" or "Michael Mitchell" (ie, not good!) sorry!

RubyLove1 Mon 29-Jun-09 11:26:26

My friend has named her Lil one Elias...thats the only one I like from your list. Its simple yet different

ShowOfHands Mon 29-Jun-09 11:29:58

Oh CurryMaid, you've made my day. I think these thoughts like 'shamus is a private eye isn't it?' and then I wonder if I'm making it all up. Gawd knows where I picked that up from.

Off to google whether there is in fact a Myles in greek mythology.

ShowOfHands Mon 29-Jun-09 11:32:05

Oh yes. Myles will have sunk in from one of the tedious Sparta movies that DH forced me to watch. Son of Lelex, father of Eurotas.

CurryMaid Mon 29-Jun-09 11:36:20

Oh yeah, Jacob James doesn't really go.

What about James?

slushy06 Mon 29-Jun-09 11:37:35

I like Myles and Elias. At first I didn't like Shamus but it grew on me after a few seconds.

xxhunnyxx Mon 29-Jun-09 11:42:07

Hi Lydia!!

I think Elwood is a pretty cool name, I like names that you can vary eg Eli/Woody. Elwood James is good smile.

Not so keen on Francis as it can be mistaken as Frances so would always be asked whether it's IS/ES. I know that I never know which way round the spellings should be lol.

Myles is better than Miles, looks like a name rather than a word.

Defo think Elwood is my fave tho, think you would suit an Elwood smile x

posieparker Mon 29-Jun-09 11:44:05

I like names spelled correctly hmmwink.
I loathe the name Miles but like others, really like Eli and Woody for nicknames.
