Someone just told me this was on their shortlist. I love it, I want it...

Can't can I?

BigusBumus Wed 24-Jun-09 19:08:20

Its not a girls name, its a fabric. Like acrylic, viscose and nylon.

Tidey Wed 24-Jun-09 19:08:49

It does sound more like a pet's name than a child's, imvho. Like a tiny wee baby rabbit.

TwoIfBySea Wed 24-Jun-09 19:09:46

She would need to have dark hair and like riding horses.

Greensleeves Wed 24-Jun-09 19:09:56

I think it's lovely

Tortington Wed 24-Jun-09 19:09:58

its also used as a descriptive term for a vagina

tipping the velvet

velvet glove etc

Tidey Wed 24-Jun-09 19:11:06

Why not Silk or Satin or Polly-Esther?

hobbgoblin Wed 24-Jun-09 19:11:42

Yes it's the name of a fabric but that doesn't matter does it, names need to have meaning beyond the name. Leo means lion, Gordon means triangular hill...

weegiemum Wed 24-Jun-09 19:11:46

No. No. No!

boodleboot Wed 24-Jun-09 19:11:47

no. i really don't think you can. could you call it out in the supermarket without feeling self conscious?

hobbgoblin Wed 24-Jun-09 19:12:48

V. good lol at polly-esther

Custy, you didn't tell me that, I didn't hear you.

stubbyfingers Wed 24-Jun-09 19:14:54

I thought fanjo too. Don't do it people!

Bonneville Wed 24-Jun-09 19:15:15

Its NOT A NAME!!!!!!!!!! Its silly. Whatever next?!

seeker Wed 24-Jun-09 19:17:01

Terry-Lyn is nice for a girl.

And don't forget the more traditional Polly Esther.

IDidntRaiseAThief Wed 24-Jun-09 19:18:12

immediately thought 'Tipping the Velvet 'too.

big no here.

sobloodystupid Wed 24-Jun-09 19:19:58

my sister has chosen a name remarkably similar to above, velvet not poly esther!. I daren't mention it here in case she googles... <scary>

earlyriser Wed 24-Jun-09 19:22:28

Not Velour sbs?

seeker Wed 24-Jun-09 19:23:22

Candlewick? Nice Dickensian type name for a boy?

TabithaTwitchet Wed 24-Jun-09 19:24:19

Isn't it the name of the girl in National Velvet? (Or is it the horse's name?)

southeastastra Wed 24-Jun-09 19:27:48

yes velvet brown

Thunderduck Wed 24-Jun-09 19:31:28

No. It's quite ridiculous.

Nylon is rather nice though, or Gore-tex for a boy.

sweetnitanitro Wed 24-Jun-09 19:32:07

It sounds like a porn star name, sorry.

sobloodystupid Wed 24-Jun-09 19:33:38

nah early riser, not velour grin. but similarish

CornishKK Wed 24-Jun-09 19:33:47

I loved the book National Velvet, not the name though, makes me think of Kleenex Velvet, soft, soft, soft.
