We've narrowed it down to two choices

I have managed to tone down my other half's atrocious taste in names (Ace... Slevin... any name that sounds truly awful with his surname). So now we're kind of agreed on Callum and Luke (we're having a boy obviously).

He isn't so sure about Callum, but I really like it. For some bizarre reason he seems to think it's unusual. He also thinks it might be some weird Scottish name (I'm Scottish, he's not). I sort of like Luke, but I have some issues with it. Firstly, I find it difficult not to imagine it said in Alec Guinness's voice (although I guess that would pass). Secondly, I think it can sound pretty awful in the accent where we currently live (we hope to move at some point, but still). And, thirdly, the other half's surname is a noun (and common one at that), and Luke sounds like an instruction (with an implied exclamation mark).

Any thoughts?

if you like Luke but it doesn't fit why don't you lengthen it to Lucas?

He'd still be Luke, even if it said Lucas on his birth certificate, so the problem wouldn't go away. Also, I don't think Lucas sounds at all good with the surname.

Luke is a name I absolutely loathe, for no particular reason (sorry to all mums/dads of Lukes out there)

Callum. Especially with the accent issues. And the Alec Guinness issues. Callum is a nicer name anyway, IMO.

Not all Callum's get Cal, my nephew doesn't and he is nearly 16. His mates have plays on their surnames instead

Callums are always naughty boys at school (am a teacher and take against certain names just because of which ones I remember as naughty kids!)

Luke is nice but if the accent issue is because you live in stoke I agree- don't call him it- oooh Look at luke (pronouced oooh loook at loook!

Callum's a bit meh. It's just not remarkable at all. Callum's probably very nice and makes a good cup of tea but he's not setting the world alight.

Not keen on Luke, and it doesn't sound like you are either! If your not 100% which you can't be with all the issues, then take it off the list! No point trying to convince yourself on a name that you are only trying to like!!! Callum is lovely, much nicer anyway. As for your husbands opinion, i think they usually come round to your way of thinking, especially when they see all the hard work you go through to pop the baby out!!

Luke is lovely and so is Lucas. To me, Callum sounds a bit 'hard' on the tongue, although the two Callums I have ever known have both been lovely.

We also have narrowed a choice down to two but my mum says we will most likely pick something completely different when the baby arrives so don't get too hung up on choosing one before your bundle of joy gets here

Luke would be a worry with the surname Down/e/s. Vernon Kay on Radio 1 speaks to a teacher called Luke Downes on his show and, in a North West accent, it does sound like a command. It made me giggle the first time I heard it. Similarly, a surname such as Sharp or W/Right would put me off Luke as a name, sorry.

Am not overly keen on Callum either, but that is just personal taste.

In Stoke they pronouce Look as Luke. Could be very confusing if he ended up there.
