What do you think? Probably either...
Edith Violet
Ivy Olivia

and whilst we're at it, is Joseph still really really popular around you?
I don't know any at the moment, either at the school I teach at or amongst DS1's friends.

I love both. Funnily enough, my grandmother was Ivy & her sister was Edith. Must be why I love them grin

I know a lovely little girl called Ivy.

Haven't met any Joes/Josephs for a long time. Quite like it.

Love Love love Edith, Violet and Ivy. (all old aunties of mine). Good proper sensible names. Not like all this made-up rubbish people are saddling their children with!

clemette Mon 01-Jun-09 22:45:49

Like both, but think Ivy Olivia is a bit of a mouthful...

My dd's middle name is Ivy and the poor child called herself X Library when she was wee.

LaDiDaDi Mon 01-Jun-09 22:47:30

Edith Olivia for me.

I think that Joseph is still pretty popular. I know 3 baby Joseph's.

Not Poison Ivy
Edith/Edie lovely

Yes, lots of Josephs in my part of London

Lulubee Mon 01-Jun-09 22:57:16

Prefer Edith to Ivy, Ivy does still have the 'poison' connotation. Also it's a small dark creeping plant. Edith is gorgeous.

MadBadandDangerousToKnow Mon 01-Jun-09 23:07:26

Edith Violet is a gorgeous combination.

Ivy Olivia isn't, in my opinion. Ivy is quite ugly (in every sense) and there are a zillion Olivias around here (which would put me off).

Lots of Josephs around here too.

Edie, a wonderful name.

mumtoted Mon 01-Jun-09 23:10:23

Ivy and Edith sound like old ladies in curlers on Coronation Street. Olivia is nice, quite popular and Violet is pretty until it gets shortened to Vi.

Ivy will always have the connetation with Ivy Tilesly for me, i'm afraid.

And Edith... well.. i think someones been watching too much Balamory... grin

ninedragons Tue 02-Jun-09 07:32:41

I love Edith. DH vetoed it and there's still a part of me that resents it.

Ivy Olivia is too echo-ey with the i and v sounds.

womma Tue 02-Jun-09 15:25:22

Both lovely. My DD's middle name is Ivy after my mum.

womma Tue 02-Jun-09 15:27:02

Has anyone seen Grey Gardens? I toyed with Edie for DD but decided against it after seeing GG!

MaggieBee Tue 02-Jun-09 16:05:43

Just personal taste but I prefer Edith. I think it's a prettier sound.

sockmonster Tue 02-Jun-09 16:18:26

I wouldn't use them, but I think Edith is best, I really really like Edie as a nn.
Ivy is a bit scary!

I also like Violet though, as a first name.

Don't personally know any LOs named Joseph.

Horton Tue 02-Jun-09 16:42:12

Edith is gorgeous and I love Violet, too.

peppapig3 Tue 02-Jun-09 20:27:49

Well, I love Ivy although I don't think it works well with Olivia. How about Ivy Sophia? Edith is okay but not a personal favourite. Violet is lovely too!

FairLadyRantALot Tue 02-Jun-09 20:31:28

Ivy wins hands down's such a beautyful name

MoooCow Tue 02-Jun-09 21:19:52

edith violet for me, just gorgeous! mine are bethany may and isla rose, i think it's important how a name goes together.....

KAEKAE Wed 03-Jun-09 16:56:59

no not my cup of tea...Ivy is ok, but but I just think of it as evil for some reason.

rachels103 Wed 03-Jun-09 20:40:14

I prefer Edith too, and dh loves it. All the poison ivy references have really put me off Ivy now - I'd never thought of it like that before. I know a lovely little girl called Ivy and it was my grandmother's name as well.

The only thing with Edith is...if she's a cool, clever little thing then I think it's lovely, but what if she's not very confident - will having a slightly unusual and potentially old lady-ish name be miserable for her?

This is probably hypothetical as I'm pretty convinced it's a boy. I thought we'd settled on Joseph but DH is now unsure...3 weeks to go and back to the drawing board on that one then <sigh>
