Baby names

Name like Emily / Thomas but less popular!

cuppachar · 01/06/2009 20:30

Surname starts with O' (DH's family are Irish). I love Emily and am still considering it but would ideally like something less common. Also like Thomas (Tom) but have ruled it out as every baby boy I know seems to be called Thomas!

Other vague possibilities...

Alice
Maeve
Bethan
Lauren

Zachary (Zach)
Joseph (bit boring)
Benjamin (DH not keen)

Any ideas? Or feedback on the possibilities above? thank you!

I have an Emily, She said she wished I'd called her Lily but I'd still call her Emily

We always called her Emma-Lily when she was a baby

Anway these are some of the others I might have used if I'd had any more babies:-
Emma
Eliza(BETH)
Sophie
Edward
Matthew (Matt)
Luke

What about Emmeline for a girl? Can shorten to Emme or Emily if you want...

Quite like Lauren, love Joseph.

Bethan is welsh so bit weird with Irish surname maybe?

I second Matthew, not that popular these days but still a good name and nn.

Luke is lovely also, think disciple!

I adore Emmeline too, would use it if not too close to dd's name.

I love Emily and Emmeline. I guarantee Emmeline will be a top 10 name in the next couple of years, though

Alice is sweet. Adore Maeve.

Matthew really nice. Samuel/Sam?

Annabel, Lydia, Elizabeth or Eleanor. I know a Bethan. Like that. I'd prefer Elizabeth Anne though.. Emma names are supersaturated.

Jamie or Daniel or George?

Girls I don't know, don't do girls . However I do quite like Nicholas for a boy. Not very popular at the moment, I don't know any children ones but a really nice name.

Robert or Nicholas would make a lovely change from the same ten names I come across all the time, nice though they are.

Martha and Rachel would also be lovely. Sarah nice too. They are as classic as Emily and James but not quite so popular right NOW.

I have an Emily Nicole so even though it is popular I like it and since a baby we seem to call her Emmie more than we do Emily!

Thanks - some good ideas here.... Ellen was already vaguely on my list, and I love Martha although not keen on ending in a vowel sound before O surname unfortunately.

quinne / maggiebee - I'm slightly undecided about Elizabeth - I like the nickname possibilities (Libby/Beth) but not so sure on the full form. Hmmm, one to consider...

currymaid - DH also thought Bethan was too Welsh-sounding so I'll cross that one off. I do like Luke, but does it sound a bit like a yob / school bully? Not remotely chavvy but for some reason I have the image he'd get into fights - is that just me as I do like the name?!

thisisyesterday - I love Edward but it's my ex-boyfriend's name so would seem a bit weird... I like Samuel and William too so you're definitely on the same wavelength with boys' names!

Glad I asked you lot - definitely some names to add to my shortlist, although somehow I still don't feel I've hit that one special boy's/girl's name like I did with DD....

How about Lucy? It always seems to go hand in hand with Emily.
Emilia is also lovely, I think.

I'ma bit stuck with boys names too - all the ones I've always liked have suddenly become super-popular!
I'm sure you could get away with Edward, especially if you use a different nickname from the one he used (Edward, Ed, Eddie, Teddy, Ned). As long as DH doesn't mind

Gegs/MaggieBee, I have an 8 week old called Nicholas Robert, so I agree that Nicholas is a great name!
OP, out of your list I like Alice, not to sure about the boys names, but I like the suggestion of William- possibly shortened to Liam?

Why not continue the Irish vibe then - Avril, Aiofe, Maeve as you have mentioned, Niamh, Orla, Nessa, or Elodie? (which is french instead). For boys - Ronan, Connor, Sean, Rory, Luke, Tadgh, Oisin, Enda, Lorcan...
