I really like Harper for a girl, what do you think?

pranma Tue 31-Mar-09 11:44:22

Like Harper Lee who wrote 'To Kill a Mockingbird'I quite like it,it is certainly unusual.

rolandbrowning Tue 31-Mar-09 11:46:44

I like it and I don't normally like those kind of names, the Harper Lee thing certainly makes it a bit cooler imo.

iwontbite Tue 31-Mar-09 11:47:22

i like it, because of the Harper Lee connotation, but I suspect not that many people will get it lol

IwishIwereonthebeach Tue 31-Mar-09 11:47:25

Or Harper Adams agricultural college. Stop harping on at me!! You get the drift. I think it sounds harsh even for a boy, let alone a girl. Soz.

RachieB Tue 31-Mar-09 11:54:24

hmm its ok ,but wouldnt use it myself

choccyp1g Tue 31-Mar-09 11:57:33

I think it's lovely, but it sounds more like a boy's name. I really like these names that are actually an job. Miller, Hunter etc., Maybe in a hundred years or so, there'll be kids called "teacher" and "busdriver" grin

choccyp1g Tue 31-Mar-09 11:58:47

Not really likely though, because the names have morphed from surnames, which hardly change nowadays.

mrsruffallo Tue 31-Mar-09 11:59:08

I love it!
I do like these surnamey names on girls, not so much on boys.
I actually know a little girl named Harper. It's lovely, go for it

too American, too nineties.. . Harper Lee's life was not very happy iirc or am I mixing her up with Carson McCullers?! Nah, sorry grin

ScottishThistle Tue 31-Mar-09 12:09:32

I really like it, but I love surnamey names.

My nephew's name is Carter, raises eyebrows but I love it!

CoteDAzur Tue 31-Mar-09 12:11:30

You know she will be called "Harpie" her entire life, right?

Littlefish Tue 31-Mar-09 12:39:21

Boy's name
Dog's name

MrsMattie Tue 31-Mar-09 13:39:58

usually hate those 'surname' names, but I like it.

Tillyscoutsmum Tue 31-Mar-09 13:41:39

I'd like to like it because of the Harper Lee connection.....but I just don't very much. Bit too surnamey

Harper is the top name on our girl name list but i must admit it stands out more to DH than it does to me.

Most people tell me they think it's a boy's name (eg gregory peck's grandson) but I can only think of it as a girl's name because of Harper lee.

it's been on our list for the past two babies but we called our DDs something else so I won't be surprised if we leave it behind if this one arriving is also a girl.

i do like it though smile. it's different.

Tamlin Wed 01-Apr-09 15:47:24

Harper Lee's real first name was Nelle, though.

I like this one more than most of the fashionable US-style profession surnames (Mason, Taylor etc), but it's still not great.

LetThemEatCake Wed 01-Apr-09 15:55:40

love it. Have a friend with a little girl called Harper, really suits her. And love To Kill A Mockingbird

screamingabdab Wed 01-Apr-09 16:16:20

I normally don't like surnames-as-first-names, but I like this one.

Very cool

notagrannyyet Wed 01-Apr-09 16:34:37

My first thought was Harper's Bazaar sorry!

And just the sort of link school age children pick up on.

Leannabanana Wed 01-Apr-09 20:32:34

I like it i think.... go for it pineapples

janeite Wed 01-Apr-09 20:33:05

I don't like it, sorry.

louisejohnson87 Wed 01-Apr-09 20:36:30

I absolutely love this name, however it's my top name for a boy.

Think it's lovely for both sexes.

worried it might start becoming fairly popular though?!?!
