a friend has asked me to get opinions on this, do you love it or hate it? (have to say i love it)

ScummyMummy Mon 02-Mar-09 16:43:10

I've never heard of it before. Is it for a boy or girl? Is it from any particular culture?

kerryk Mon 02-Mar-09 16:44:41

girls name. i thought it was scottish but my friend is convinced it is irish.

crokky Mon 02-Mar-09 16:45:12

it's a skiing place in Europe isn't it? Don't know how I'd pronounce it.

kerryk Mon 02-Mar-09 16:46:27

grin so its not looking good so far then?

ShauntheSheep Mon 02-Mar-09 16:50:43

Are you thinking of the name Muireann? Which is actually pronounced M-w-irr-an, a bit like the beginning of Moi.

Pronounced properly I think it is gorgeous but dp couldnt get his head round it and have to say I really do NOT like it pronounced Murren TBH. Sorry

i think the spelling she was planning on was murrin but i have written it down wrong.

morna is lovely but as her name is lorna it may be confusing grin

The niece of a friend is called Murren. I think it's gaelic. I quite like the sound of it, but the spelling is slightly ugly.

GossipMonger Mon 02-Mar-09 16:59:43

think the spelling and sound are ugly

I think it's pretty, but I like the spelling "Mirren" or "Mirrin" better. I also like Maren and Mara, all very cute!

LouMacca Mon 02-Mar-09 17:49:50

agree with Gossip.

BonsoirAnna Mon 02-Mar-09 17:51:32

Murren is a small village in the Swiss Alps.

BonsoirAnna Mon 02-Mar-09 17:52:36

It's positively weird as a first name and rather too close to "moron" for comfort.

SoupDragon Mon 02-Mar-09 17:57:12

It' s kind of ugly looking.

queenofeyes Mon 02-Mar-09 20:30:45

I also have a feeling "murrain" is some kind of cattle disease...

LiffeyBag Mon 02-Mar-09 20:32:53

My son's doctor is Muireann, pronounced Mwirren, and sometimes Mirren. Bit like Helen Mirren. I quite like it, don't love it.

LiffeyBag Mon 02-Mar-09 20:34:26

Yes, mór is gaelic for big.

Angelsus Mon 02-Mar-09 20:56:05

I know of quite a few Mirren's. It's quite popular here (north scotland) and I like it!

Botbot Mon 02-Mar-09 21:00:06

Too close to Maureen?

YesSirICanBoogie Mon 02-Mar-09 21:12:24

There are loads of Mirrens in Paisley after the local football team. I think all the variations are from the same root.
