Oh I don't know.... I would always think of the Blues Brothers (which is good on on level). Buy him some dark glasses and a black suit and he's be OK grin

yes, but only if you get him a dog and call it Jake, then tatoo his name on his knuckles....on second thyoughts.....

Bit odd. 'El' would be the instinctive shortening which is very feminine.

MmeLindt Sat 28-Feb-09 19:09:14

Don't like it, sorry.

Mark Owen from Take That's son is called Elwood.

diedandgonetodevon Sat 28-Feb-09 19:12:09

No. Sounds like the name of a house not a person.

MaryBS Sat 28-Feb-09 19:16:23

It made me think of the Blues Brothers too!

Not as in Elwood blues, its from a play/James Stewart film called Harvey, the main character is called Elwood. Also means from an ancient forest according to my name book. Does any of this info make a difference?
Clutching at straws here!

Not sure about the name (absolutely love Harvey the film, though), but if you like it, don't worry about the El shortening, I have an Elliot, and often call him El- he certainly doesn't look girly, which helps!

I used to have a cat called Elwood - he was gorgeous grin. (And yes, his brother was Jake).

Hi there reluctant1stimer - Harvey's one of my fave plays/films - Elwood is a great choice I think! Very unusual and interesting and unique.

I'm the proud mama of a little boy called Elwood, named after Jimmy Stewart's splendid character in Harvey. It's a great name and receives a lot of compliments. Also, we often shorten it to Woody : )

I love the film connections but Elwood (Harvey) is a hallucinating alcoholic...

As a kid I had rabbits called Jake and Elwood.

Maybe Woody could be the nickname.

But he says one of the greatest lines in film history:

Years ago my mother used to say to me, she'd say, "In this world, Elwood, you must be" - she always called me Elwood - "In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant." Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. You may quote me.

I am having a baby and if it's a boy he's going to be called Elwood...it's a wonderful, strong and unusual name. Woody is a great nickname too!

nappyaddict Sun 12-Apr-09 10:54:19

I like it. You can use Els, Eli, El, Woody for nicknames.

i love that film, i studied it during my philosophy degree... its a great name - i may have to run it past DH actually....

Is Harvey the one with the huge rabbit?! Haha! Stepdad loves that film! Love Elwood with nn Woody or Ells which is only feminine on a girl! Love Blues Bro link too. I only wonder if uncool sounding like Wilbur ect but I have a feeling it gets away with sounding cool. Is it gonna get popular??

Friend has a dog named Elwood. It's a great name for a dog...
