Sorry, with the possible exception of Bridie (which for perhaps misplaced feminist reasons I don't like) they're too zany for me.

Topsy sounds like a bunny
Lutina - is this a real name?
Lowena - ditto
Dulcie - don't like
Bridie - reminds me of a radio play I heard as a child where Bridie Murphy cut someone's head off.

What an eclectic mix! What's wrong with Bridie MadBad?

Flum · 15/10/2008 00:06

I know a Lutina, she is somewhat pretentious but it came to me in the night last night.

Have loved Topsy ever since was first pregnant and am now probably about to have 3rd girl and still love it. Don't know why!

Lowena is Cornish, I like it.

I also like Lucy, Heidi, Judy, Darcy, Fallon, Claudia, Gloria, Clara and Portia.

Of all of them DH only likes Lucy and Portia

I love Dulcie. Have just finished reading a book with a character called Dulcie and have already noted it for future babies!

I'm guessing that Bridie is actually an abbreviation of Bridget but I'm uncomfortable with it sounding so much like Bride. It brings out the dungaree-clad feminist in me and makes me worry that so many little and not-so-little girls think that the most important thing they can do in life is to get married. Calling a girl Bridie maybe reinforces that.

But, as I said, I'm possibly reading too much into it.

Relish the honesty - specially Custardo.

Also like Jane and Mary so not a total lost cause. I think if you don't have an automatic family name to use or a clear favourite - which we do for a boy then you just keep looking and get more and more way out.

Topsy is SUCH a NICE name though.

Flum - no of course it's not awful. Getting married is (obviously and hugely) significant. I just don't want my daughter to think that all her life is a preparation for being married, in case it doesn't happen for whatever reason. So I would have felt uncomfortable calling her Bridie but, as I said, I'm probably reading too much into it.

As I've said before, the opinions of a mad old biddy on the internet are immaterial. Pick the names you like!

wiki topsy from uncle toms cabin

Topsy
A "ragamuffin" young slave girl of unknown origin. When asked if she knows who made her, she professes ignorance of both God and a mother, saying "I s'pect I growed. Don't think nobody never made me." She was transformed by Little Eva's love. Topsy is often seen as the origin of the pickaninny stereotype of Black children and Black dolls. During the early-to-mid 1900s, several doll manufacturers created Topsy and Topsy-type dolls.

The phrase "growed like Topsy" (later "grew like Topsy"; now somewhat archaic) passed into the English language, originally with the specific meaning of unplanned growth, later sometimes just meaning enormous growth.[22]

wiki bridie

A bridie or Forfar bridie is a Scottish type of meat pastry or pie, originally made in the town of Forfar, similar to a Cornish pasty in shape, but the pastry is not as hard and no potato is used. It is made of minced beef, sometimes with onions and spices, placed on rolled-out pastry and folded into a semi-circular shape; the whole thing is baked in an oven.

LOL at Custy's Mary, Joseph and Jesus... Would be kinda funny, no?

I like Lowena, precisely because it is Cornish. Have also seen Lowenna, I think.

I think that lutin is a gnome or a goblin or something in French, so to me a Lutina would be a little goblin girl. (I may have made that up, though, as my French is a tad rusty!)

I like Dulcie (reminds me of 'Dulcie Domum' who used to be in The Guardian years ago...) and (from your longer list) Portia (but is there a risk people think you've named her after the car, Porsche?).

Topsy is a pet's name, sorry!

the real irony is my youngest son refers to himself as Jesus - he has delusions of grandeur clearly ( he is 15!)

Sorry, but if I'd had to guess what section a thread called "Topsy, Lutina, Lowena, Dulcie and Bridie" was in, I would have said Chicken Keepers. They do sound like someone's flock of heritage-breed hens.

What about something like Tabitha or Rowena? Pretty but not quite as twee. Clara is absolutely lovely.
