I know a Lutina, she is somewhat pretentious but it came to me in the night last night.

Have loved Topsy ever since was first pregnant and am now probably about to have 3rd girl and still love it. Don't know why!

Lowena is Cornish, I like it.

I also like Lucy, Heidi, Judy, Darcy, Fallon, Claudia, Gloria, Clara and Portia.

Of all of them DH only likes Lucy and Portia

I'm guessing that Bridie is actually an abbreviation of Bridget but I'm uncomfortable with it sounding so much like Bride. It brings out the dungaree-clad feminist in me and makes me worry that so many little and not-so-little girls think that the most important thing they can do in life is to get married. Calling a girl Bridie maybe reinforces that.

But, as I said, I'm possibly reading too much into it.

Also like Jane and Mary so not a total lost cause. I think if you don't have an automatic family name to use or a clear favourite - which we do for a boy then you just keep looking and get more and more way out.

Flum - no of course it's not awful. Getting married is (obviously and hugely) significant. I just don't want my daughter to think that all her life is a preparation for being married, in case it doesn't happen for whatever reason. So I would have felt uncomfortable calling her Bridie but, as I said, I'm probably reading too much into it.

As I've said before, the opinions of a mad old biddy on the internet are immaterial. Pick the names you like!

I like Lowena, precisely because it is Cornish. Have also seen Lowenna, I think.

I think that lutin is a gnome or a goblin or something in French, so to me a Lutina would be a little goblin girl. (I may have made that up, though, as my French is a tad rusty!)

I like Dulcie (reminds me of 'Dulcie Domum' who used to be in The Guardian years ago...) and (from your longer list) Portia (but is there a risk people think you've named her after the car, Porsche?).

Sorry, but if I'd had to guess what section a thread called "Topsy, Lutina, Lowena, Dulcie and Bridie" was in, I would have said Chicken Keepers. They do sound like someone's flock of heritage-breed hens.

What about something like Tabitha or Rowena? Pretty but not quite as twee. Clara is absolutely lovely.
